Protesters chant 'Fire Fauci!' in front of Texas state Capitol
A group of protesters in Texas seeking to reopen nonessential businesses gathered outside the state's Capitol in Austin. The demonstrators chanted phrases such as "Let us work!," "Fire Fauci!," and "Make America free again!" as they paraded around the building. Thousands of people have taken to the streets in multiple states, urging government officials to reopen local nonessential businesses as millions of people have lost their jobs during the pandemic. In Texas specifically, more than 1 million people, or roughly 7% of their entire workforce, filed for unemployment this month.
The president weighed in on the protests on social media Friday morning, appearing to side with the protesters, demanding the liberation of Michigan, Minnesota, and Virginia. He later addressed the tweets during that day's briefing, explaining that some of the states had stay-at-home orders that were "too tough," but he also said he wanted those governors to keep their stay-at-home orders in place. Also on Friday, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas announced that stores will be allowed to reopen May 1. "Obviously, not all businesses can open all at once on May the first," he explained. "Some businesses, if fully open, without better distancing standards, would be more likely to set us back, rather than to propel us forward. A more strategic approach is required to ensure that we don't reopen only to have to shut down once again."
