Federal judge blocks Democratic governor's attempt to limit religious gatherings: 'Religious activity was targeted for stricter treatment'

'Singled out'

Kansas Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order April 7 prohibiting mass gatherings of more than 10 people — and explicitly called out religious services. But a federal judge issued a ruling Saturday blocking the governor's order.

U.S. District Judge John Broomes said that he believes the policy likely violates religious freedom as well as free speech protections, the Associated Press reported.

Broomes' ruling prevents the enforcement of Kelly's order as long as church officials and members of the congregation following social distancing guidelines, the AP said.

The case was brought by two Baptist churches — First Baptist Church of Dodge City and Calvary Baptist Church of Junction City — that were represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom.

What did the governor order?

Kelly has issued a string of executive orders addressing "mass gatherings" amid the coronavirus pandemic, with each new order replacing the previous and becoming more restrictive — especially with regard to religious gatherings.

Broomes noted that on March 17, the governor issued an order prohibited "mass gatherings" of 50 or more people. But the order included a list of exemptions, including “Religious gatherings, as long as attendees can engage in appropriate social distancing."

A week later, on March 24, Kelly issued a new order banning gatherings of 10 or more people. The exemption for religious gatherings was maintained.

And on March 27, the governor actually declared performing or attending religious services as an "essential function."

Then, on April 7, just days before Easter, Kelly issued a new executive order with an updated list of venues where the "mass gathering" rule applies — and for the first time the list included "churches or other religious facilities."

But that wasn't all that was updated.

The new order included new language specifically targeting churches:

With regard to churches or other religious services or activities, this order prohibits gatherings of more than ten congregants or parishioner in the same building or confined or enclosed space. However, the number of individuals – such as preachers, lay readers, choir or musical performer, or liturgists – conducting or performing a religious service may exceed ten as long as those individuals follow appropriate safety protocols, including maintaining a six-foot distance between individuals and following other directive regarding social distancing, hygiene, and other efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Chaos on Chios: Migrants riot on Greek Orthodox Holy Saturday

Migrants living on the eastern Aegean Greek island of Chios set fires and attacked police on Orthodox Holy Saturday into the early morning hours of Easter Sunday.

Two cars, tents, a canteen inside of the migrant camp, and houses were burned during the chaos which ensued after false news of an Iraqi woman dying from COVID-19 caused fear and anxiety to spread among the camp’s migrants, news portal Politis Chios reports.

The rumor began circulating within the camp after the Iraqi woman was taken to the Chios Hospital to undergo routine checks for the virus. It later came out that the woman had not been infected with the virus.

Following a number of violent outburst which occurred earlier in the day, the migrants started to hurl stones at police at around 9:00pm. The situation became even more tense when some of the migrants decided to set fire to tents, cars, the camp canteen, and number of housing structures.

When violence finally stopped sometime during the early hours of Easter Sunday morning, Chios police arrested three of the immigrants who were deemed to be responsible for inciting the violence. The three migrants now face hefty criminal charges. Police continue to identify others who were involved.

In response to the incident, Greece’s Minister of Immigration and Asylum said: “Difficult night yesterday at the migrant camp and congratulations to the police and staff for enforcing order. Those responsible for the incident will be found.”

Star-Studded ‘One World’ Benefit Concert for the W.H.O. Sparks Outrage: ‘Commie Propaganda’

Critics of the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) expressed anger over Saturday’s star-studded “One World” benefit concert held to raise funds for the U.N. body after President Donald Trump pulled funding for the organization over its connections to the Chinese communist regime.

The “One World” concert, led by the W.H.O. and non-profit group Global Citizen, was broadcast across multiple television channels in the U.S. and around the world on Saturday, with the aim of raising money for the W.H.O.’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.

The line-up of stars for the event included Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Beyonce, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, and Lady Gaga, who even described W.H.O. Director-General Tedros Adhanom as a “superstar.”

The concert also attracted contributions from political figures such as former first ladies Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, as well as celebrity supporters of the cause including former soccer star David Beckham and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

However, many people were left unimpressed by the event, denouncing the organization’s handling of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic and describing it as a form of globalist propaganda.

“If I could give No stars I would,” one Amazon reviewer wrote. “WHO lied! People died!! Let’s not forgot this!!! While we’re home given up our freedom and most of us without jobs these CELEBRITIES ask us to help raise money for the WHO?! Forget it!”

“Yes, we need useless celebrities preaching to us how this isn’t China’s fault and how we should just all live as one nation,” added another.

Skeptics also lashed out on Twitter against W.H.O. chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom, a former official in Ethiopia’s Marxist Tigray People’s Liberation Front, who has been the subject of widespread criticism for his attempts to downplay China’s role in the outbreak.

One US city is deploying a Chinese firm’s drones to police Americans who are not social distancing

Elizabeth, New Jersey Mayor J. Christian Bollwage is deploying a Chinese company’s drones to help police people who violate social distancing mandates.

The drones will help police officers enact fines as high as $1,000 on people who are not keeping their distance amid a global pandemic that has killed tens of thousands in the United States.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement warned in 2017 that the drones are collecting information on crucial U.S. infrastructure and the U.S. Army has banned their use.

Elizabeth, New Jersey, is using a Chinese company’s drones to police citizens who fail to employ social distancing guidelines. Past reports suggest the drones are feeding China data.

Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage is deploying drones from Chinese-based company DJI to warn Elizabeth citizens who are walking outdoors not to get too close in physical proximity to other people. The drones blare sirens and issue this warning: “Stop gathering, disperse and go home.”

Bollwage is dismissing critics of his approach.

“If these drones save one life, it is clearly worth the activity and the information that the drones are sending,” the mayor said Friday in an MSNBC interview.

New Jersey is considered a coronavirus hotspot — more than 3,000 in the state have died from the virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, before skipping across the globe and landing in the United States, where it has killed more than 30,000 people. The drones might not be benign.

Past reports suggest DJI poses a substantial security threat to U.S. infrastructure.

A 2017 memo from the Los Angeles office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau said officials had “moderate confidence” that DJI’s commercial drones are giving critical U.S. “infrastructure and law enforcement data to the Chinese government.”

The memo cited first- and second-hand anonymous sources inside the drone industry. ICE has not responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment about the memo, which was initially reported in November 2017 by The New York Times.

The memo also stated that officials had “high confidence the company is selectively targeting government and privately owned entities within these sectors to expand its ability to collect and exploit sensitive U.S. data.” The U.S. Army banned the use of all DJI drones in 2017, citing “cyber vulnerabilities.”

DJI is dismissing ICE’s claims and said the company gives full control over the drones to the users.

Trump Admin Redirects W.H.O. Funding to Samaritan’s Purse, Red Cross

The White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has redirected funds from the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) to charitable groups such as Samaritan’s Purse and the Red Cross, the New York Post reported Thursday.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump ordered a 60-day hold on U.S. funding to the W.H.O., asserting the organization failed to vet information about the novel coronavirus coming out of China, and ultimately covered up the seriousness of its effects because of its friendly relationship with that nation.

The New York Post noted the funds would be redirected to charities, such as the Red Cross, and Christian organization Samaritan’s Purse, led by its president, Rev. Franklin Graham:

An administration official told The Post that efforts were underway to redirect “every single pot of money” from the WHO to other organizations. Large international relief organizations already are in many cases doing similar work, they said.

The administration official said that the White House Office of Management and Budget would send any necessary notifications to Congress when there are decisions to redirect funds, though in some cases that may be unnecessary.

EU Commission Boss Issues Another Coronavirus Apology as Bloc Cracks

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has issued another apology to Italy over the European Union’s lack of solidarity during the Chinese coronavirus outbreak.

Mrs von der Leyen stated in the European Parliament this week that she wanted to extend a “heartfelt apology” and said: “Too many were not there on time when Italy needed a helping hand at the very beginning.”

The apology comes just weeks after she had another apology published in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica entitled “I apologise, we are with you.”

The EU leader then claimed that “Europe has now become the world’s beating heart of solidarity”, noting that EU countries had offered each other hospital beds and medical supplies.

Von der Leyen also pushed the idea of a coronavirus “Marshall Plan” to deal with the economic fallout of the Chinese virus, saying: “We need massive investments to restart the economy, a European Marshall Plan. And it must be activated immediately.”

One of the measures proposed to help Italy has been the use of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), a bailout fund that gives loans to member-states.

The ESM has seen massive resistance within Italy from Senator Matteo Salvini, however, who has criticised the measure as eroding the sovereignty of Italy and having adverse effects if it results in the country being forced to restructure debt.

Members of the Five Star Movement (M5S), who form the current governing coalition with the leftist Democrats (PD), have gone as far as saying they will vote to bring down Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government if the ESM is used.

Tennessee can't delay abortions, 'even by a matter of days,' amid COVID-19, judge says

Tennessee must allow abortions to move forward during the COVID-19 pandemic, a federal judge ruled Friday evening, handing a victory to abortion providers who have fought the state for years.

U.S. District Judge Bernard A. Friedman issued a preliminary injunction that kept the state from stopping surgical abortions. State lawyers quickly moved to appeal, and they asked the judge to delay his decision until a federal appeals court could weigh in.

Gov. Bill Lee had issued an executive order earlier this month that banned "non-emergency" medical procedures through April 30 in an effort to preserve medical equipment needed to fight the coronavirus.

Abortion providers said the order forced them to cancel or delay several surgical procedures. They filed a challenge in federal court Monday, saying the order violated women's constitutional right to access abortions.

Friedman sided with abortion providers, saying they had convincingly argued Lee's order was too restrictive.

"Abortion is a time-sensitive procedure," Friedman wrote. "Delaying a woman’s access to abortion even by a matter of days can result in her having to undergo a lengthier and more complex procedure that involves progressively greater health risks, or can result in her losing the right to obtain an abortion altogether."

Lawyers from the Tennessee attorney general's office had argued the executive order was necessary to preserve personal protective equipment, or PPE, for workers fighting the coronavirus.

The state lawyers said abortion clinics could pull needed supplies away from hospitals for abortions, which they described as "non-urgent procedures that are not emergencies.”

In his order, Friedman said the abortion providers had shown they used a limited amount of PPE, and that timely abortions required less PPE than continuing a pregnancy.

The judge, who was appointed to the federal bench by former President Ronald Reagan, issued his order after hearing from both sides during a telephone conference earlier Friday.

Abortion advocates, who had joined providers to ask for the restraining order in federal court, cheered Friedman's decision Friday night.

“The court’s decision today ensures that women in Tennessee can continue to make their own decisions about pregnancy and parenting based on what is best for their families,” Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee said in a statement. “Abortion is time-sensitive essential health care and the COVID-19 crisis cannot be used to prevent women from obtaining abortions. Especially during a pandemic, it is crucial that women have access to a full range of health services, including abortion, to ensure their health and wellbeing.”

The Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the ACLU, and other allies joined the Tennessee abortion providers in this effort. The national groups have fought similar efforts to curtail abortion in other states amid COVID-19.

Soon after Friedman entered his order Friday night, the Tennessee attorney general's office notified the court they would appeal. They asked Friedman to delay his order until the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had reviewed the issue.

In their motion for a stay, the Tennessee attorneys argued Friedman's order allowing surgical abortions to continue amid the pandemic "undermines the State’s ability to effectively prepare for the incoming wave of infections and ensures that the virus may continue to spread through the State’s healthcare system and beyond."

Lee's office did not respond to a request for comment Friday night.

The Tennessee abortion providers challenged Lee's COVID-19 order within an ongoing lawsuit over the state's 48-hour abortion waiting period law. That case already went to trial, and a decision is pending.

Prosecutor reveals how one teenage girl was grilled by 11 barristers for six days and called a liar - but refused to back down and laid bare the horror of Asian rape gangs

A car door was flung open and the two girls were pushed out into the darkness. They fell awkwardly on to the moorland heather as the vehicle accelerated away and the tail-lights disappeared into the night.

The girls grabbed each other, huddling together, frozen in fear. After several minutes, when they were sure the car wasn’t coming back, they looked across the barren landscape of Saddleworth Moor towards the lights of civilisation blinking faintly in the distance. Then they began the long 14-mile walk back to town.

It was a little after 8.30 the next morning when Sara Rowbotham parked her car outside the sexual health support service she ran in Rochdale, ten miles north-east of Manchester.

As she stepped out of the vehicle, she saw the two shivering girls sitting on the steps.
