The Virus turns off interferon, fairly normal in Viri that attack cells. That's how you get sick.
WuFlu turns off a secondary response. This is unusual. Effectively the virus doesn't let you know you're sick.

However, the toxins produced by the virus and the dead cells killed by the virus produce toxins that enter the blood. But blood toxins don't trigger the immune system. They trigger the garbage system, the liver, pancrease and kidneys.
Alcoholics and smokers who are young, do not suffer immediately from similar effects. Surface epithelial cell damage due to smoking may be the reason smokers suffer less.
Also, until the virus is detected in other areas of the body the virus load grows.
Therefore we sometimes get cytokine storms as the immune system does the correct thing but finds far more viri than it should.
