LYNNWOOD, Wash. — Some Seattle-based advocacy groups are expected this week to ask Gov. Jay Inslee to follow California’s lead and create a stimulus package for undocumented workers who have been left reeling by the coronavirus.
In Lynnwood, COVID-19 has ravaged the Murguia’s hair salon business, and her relatives say her economic future is uncertain.
“She (does) not have any income," said her daughter, Daniela Murguia. "She encountered the issue of having to close down the business. “
Murguia's mother is undocumented and moved to the U.S. from Mexico. The salon shop owner paid taxes but she does not qualify for a stimulus check or extended unemployment benefits, her daughter said.
Earlier this month, Seattle’s mayor gave out relief checks to some undocumented business owners. The city is now trying to find new funding for a second round of aid.
