Today is my birthday.

40 yrs. ago today, I was three weeks into Basic Training and we were at at the Zero Range.

I had never shot a rifle or any other gun in my life.

I had no idea what the heck I was doing, but the range instructors were very patient with me.

Other guys, good 'ol boys, had been shooting since they were kids.

No one knew it was by birthday. I didn't tell anybody. I felt very alone.

I don't know why, but now, whenever it's my birthday, I think of that birthday that I spent at the Zero Range.

Very cool.

Yep, those were some crazy days.

When I signed up, I had no idea what I was in for.

They sure kept us going from sun up 'till sun down.

And then there was night training too.

Every day was a surprise.

Surprisingly, for never having shot a gun before that, I ended up getting an expert rifle badge. I think it helped that I have always been far sighted.

I was one of only two in my whole company of about 100 GIs that shot expert.
