Both are similar methodologies.
CNN is defining a set to analyze and the filter for analysis and looking for patterns in the set that can be analyzed for a pattern of change ie (zoom). It is like the horizontal plane of info in the fractal pattern when zoomed (zoom is looking at it from 3rd person above).
