"crop" has been used as a euphemism to mean "gerneration of people" for years and years. Next years crop of recruits…this years crop of graduates….etc. This is an age old(think old age) usage. The corn being ready to cut could have meant the "virus" was ready to release to kill(harvest) out the older people (crop)
