How the coronavirus could delay presidential election results one week
Coronavirus forcing Americans to mail-in votes could cause the results of the presidential election to be delayed past their date in November.
Public officials unused to such a high increase in mail-in votes could see the certifications of the results being pushed back at least a week.
'It's a culture shift that's going to be required,' Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, said to Yahoo News. 'We should be prepared to wait at least a week before results can be certified.'
Gupta said that the group plans to work with others to raise awareness to the public and the media that election results would not be ready on election night.
The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights is one of the oldest civil rights groups in the country.
'People are going to have to be able to be patient to wait for the results,' Gupta added. 'That's an uncomfortable position for a lot of people. The media's not used to it. The public's not used to it.'
She continued: 'Election officials need to be able to do their job to make sure they are counting every ballot. The danger would be if there is false pressure that gets built in and people are disenfranchised because of this false pressure.'
