Trump orders Navy to 'destroy' Iranian boats 'harassing' US ships in warning over provocative maneuvers

President Trump said he directed the Navy to destroy Iranian military vessels that conduct provocative maneuvers near U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf. “I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” Trump tweeted Wednesday.

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said last week that 11 small vessels belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy conducted “dangerous and harassing approaches” toward U.S. ships. The U.S. ships were conducting operations with Army Apache helicopters in the northern Persian Gulf, the statement said. The Iranian vessels “repeatedly crossed the bows and sterns of the U.S. vessels at extremely close range and high speeds,” a Navy spokesman said in a statement. The U.S. ships issued multiple warnings but received no response, the military said.

Democratic lawmaker who endorsed Trump: 'Black Americans are waking up. An uprising is near'

A Georgia Democratic lawmaker who recently announced he is supporting President Trump in November lashed out at Democrats for “using and abusing” the black community and taking its vote for granted for “far too long.” “I’ve seen more Democrats attack me for my decision to endorse @realDonaldTrump than ask me why,” Georgia state Rep. Vernon Jones tweeted Tuesday. “They’ve used and abused folks in my community for far too long, taking our votes for granted. Black Americans are waking up. An uprising is near.” Jones added on Twitter Wednesday, "The Left hates me because they can't control me."

Jones made national headlines in mid-April when he announced that Trump’s record helping the black community, aiding military veterans, and improving the lives of farmers has motivated him to ditch his party and vote Republican in November. “It’s very simple to me. President Trump’s handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges, and his criminal justice initiatives drew me to endorse his campaign,” Jones said. “This is not about switching parties. There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate he’s doing something that’s never been done before,” he added. “When you look at the unemployment rates among black Americans before the pandemic, they were at historic lows. That’s just a fact.”

Jones’s decision was met with hostility from local members of his own party. "I am aware that Rep. Vernon Jones has endorsed Donald Trump," Chairman of the DeKalb County Democratic Party John Jackson responded. "This is in no way acceptable. Action will be taken at @DekalbGADems steering committee meeting on Thursday. I will address this more later." Nikema Williams, chairwoman of the Georgia State Democratic Party, called Jones "an embarrassment."

State to cancel Democrat-connected vendor for COVID-19 tracing after criticism

The state on Tuesday said it is canceling a contract for its COVID-19 tracing program after Republicans criticized that the company is closely connected with progressive political campaigns. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services contracted Every Action VAN “to provide software to help organize remote phone banking and track information and contacts,” according to a news release.

Every Action VAN has overlapping leadership with NGP VAN, the latter which describes itself as “the leading technology provider to Democratic and progressive campaigns.” Stu Trevelyan is the CEO of both companies, according to each website.

“Nearly every major Democratic campaign in America is powered by NGP VAN's software,” its website says. MDHHS spokesperson Lynn Suftin told The Center Square in a Tuesday afternoon email that the Every Action Van contract is being canceled.

Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox said her party was concerned “how this data will be used.” Cox added: “Awarding the contract for such a critically important project to an openly partisan political firm raises major questions about Governor Whitmer’s ethics and her priorities,” she said in a statement issued on Tuesday. “The fact that there is now the possibility that it will be utilized for partisan ends is deeply troubling. This is yet another example of the governor’s reckless leadership during a pandemic while abusing her power for political gain.”

Earlier Tuesday, State Rep. Shane Hernandez, R-Port Huron, asked Whitmer in a letter about the contract details. “I want to know how Gov. Whitmer’s administration decided to hire this company without a competitive bid process, or letting the Legislature – charged with ensuring accountability within state government – know about it,” Hernandez said in a statement. “I want to know what safeguards the governor has in place to ensure the information gathered during this COVID-19 response doesn’t wind up in the hands of any campaigns.”
