WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — A top Iranian military official warned of a “crushing response” if the United States military follows through on President Donald Trump’s threats to destroy vessels that harass U.S. Navy ships, further escalating a war of words at a time when both countries are struggling to contain a novel coronavirus outbreak that could leave them ill-prepared to weather a military confrontation.

“I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” President Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
