Milan has a more northerly latitude than NYC. Madrid lies at roughly the same latitude as Philadelphia. That should answer your question, if you can appreciate that seasonal sun strength is a function of latitude, obviously with weather and cloud cover playing a significant role in the amount of sunlight. It has been winter in Europe too. But how many cases/deaths have there been relative to the US/Europe in the more southerly regions of the northern hemisphere: the tropics, Mexico, or in Africa, or India? Do you begin to see some correlation?
