UV Light That Is Safe for Humans but Bad for Bacteria and Viruses

In the constant battle against the spread of infectious diseases, scientists are continually on the hunt for new weapons that specifically target pathogenic microbes. Now, investigators from the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) believe they may have found a new, low-cost solution to eradicating airborne viruses in indoor public spaces. The research team found that continuous low doses of far ultraviolet C (far-UVC) light can kill airborne flu viruses without harming human tissues. The findings from the new study—published today in Scientific Reports in an article entitled “Far-UVC Light: A New Tool to Control the Spread of Airborne-Mediated Microbial Diseases”—suggests that use of overhead far-UVC light in hospitals, doctors’ offices, schools, airports, airplanes, and other public spaces could provide a powerful check on seasonal influenza epidemics, as well as influenza pandemics.

Scientists have known for decades that broad-spectrum UVC light, which has a wavelength of between 200 to 400 nanometers (nm), is highly effective at killing bacteria and viruses by destroying the molecular bonds that hold their DNA together. This conventional UV light is routinely used to decontaminate surgical equipment.

The collection contains the papers of John G. Trump, 1907-1985, professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It includes material about Trump's study of the use of energized electrons to disinfect municipal sludge; patents issued to Trump and Robert J. Van de Graaff; and information about Trump's involvement with professional associations and other professional activities.

One can also find in this collection administrative and research records of the MIT High Voltage Research Laboratory, which Trump directed from 1946 to 1980.

During World War II, Trump was on leave from MIT serving in leadership positions at the U.S. government radar research laboratory, the Radiation Laboratory, part of Division 14 (Radar) of the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC). Documents relating to his work on the Steering Committee of the lab and as director of the British Branch of the Radiation Laboratory (BBRL) are government records and are held in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Northeast region.

In the 1970s John Trump also studied the application of the use of a high voltage accelerator in treating wastewater. An intense electron beam from a high voltage accelerator was used successfully as the deactivating agent in the treatment of municipal wastewater sludge. In pilot plant studies by the High Voltage Research Laboratory, a prototype system erected at one of Boston's wastewater treatment plants demonstrated continuous on-line treatment providing bacterial and viral disinfection.

UV Phototherapy Has Positive Effect in Viral Treatments

Abstract

Ultraviolet phototherapy is being widely used in clinics for many reasons; however, there is no report on its use in treatment of human viral diseases. The conventional chemotherapeutic treatments for viral diseases such as HIV, flu, Ebola and viral STDs do not address successful outcomes. Here, a new adjuvant therapy is hypothesized; Adjuvant Ultraviolet Phototherapy (AUVP), which in conjunction with conventional therapies will enhance the results of the treatments for viral diseases. AUVP therapy will elevate blood vitamin D content; in turn vitamin D promotes immune system to fight viral infections. Furthermore, UV penetrates through skin to some extent and has direct antiviral effect. Such effects in conjunction with conventional treatments have cumulative actions to suppress the viral maladies. AUVP hypothesis is proposed with supportive evidences postulated from the following scientific findings: a) there is correlation between sunlight (UV) intensity, blood content of vitamin D and flu incidence; b) flu almost disappears in the months following the summer solstice; c) influenza is more common in the tropics during diminished sunlight; d) children exposed to sunlight are less likely to get colds; e) children with vitamin D deficiency suffer from frequent respiratory viral infections. These clues indicate vitamin D increases in people exposed to UV or sunlight; making them less vulnerable to viral invasions. Implication of AUVP for its adjunct curative effect can be achieved using technician supervised tanning beds, sunbaths, tanning machines or light cabinets. AUVP suppressive action can be implemented in: immune-suppressed persons exposed to or came in contact with patients with dangerous viral infections, patients showing early stages of acute phase of viral infections, patients with long lasting chronic phase of viral infections, prophylactic treatments for people with high risk of viral infections as nurses or other hospital personnel during viral epidemics. Before it's implication on humans, AUVP treatment should be first evaluated in animal studies.

BB? Did you notice these BB's?

One of them is even BB=8

On the warm, cloudy morning of Dec. 16, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt stood on the weather-deck of the presidential yacht Mayflower, anchored in the waters off Hampton Roads, Va. He flashed his famous broad, toothy smile and thought how "bully" it was to see a mighty armada of US battleships passing in review before him. The President, and indeed the throngs of onlookers gathered on shore, felt a great sense of pride and exhilaration as 16 battleships of the US Atlantic Fleet, all painted white, save for gilded bows, steamed in a long majestic column out of Hampton Roads to the open sea, flanked by their attending auxiliary ships.

Great White Fleet

To the familiar strains of "The Girl I left Behind Me," the procession of battlewagons passed before the President at 400-yard intervals with their crews smartly manning the rails. This newly designated battle fleet was made up of ships commissioned since the end of the Spanish-American War. They were USS Kearsarge (BB-5), USS Kentucky (BB-6), USS Illinois (BB-7), USS Alabama (BB-8), USS Maine (BB-10), USS Missouri (BB-11), USS Ohio (BB-12), USS Virginia (BB-13), USS Georgia (BB-15), USS New Jersey (BB-16), USS Rhode Island (BB-17), USS Connecticut (BB-18), USS Louisiana (BB-19), USS Vermont (BB-20), USS Kansas (BB-21) and USS Minnesota (BB-22).

The four squadrons of warships, dubbed the "Great White Fleet," were manned by 14,000 sailors and marines under the command of Rear Adm. Robley "Fighting Bob" Evans. All were embarking upon a naval deployment the scale of which had never been attempted by any nation before - the first 'round-the-world cruise by a fleet of steam-powered, steel battleships. The 43,000 mile, 14-month circumnavigation would include 20 port calls on six continents; it is widely considered one of the greatest peacetime achievements of the US Navy.

The idea of sending the new battle fleet around the world was the brainchild of the energetic "Teddy" Roosevelt, former colonel of the Rough Riders and one-time assistant secretary of the Navy. Assuming the presidency after the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, Roosevelt brought to the White House a deep conviction that only through a strong navy could a nation project its power and prestige abroad.
