A Scanner Darkly is a 2006 American adult animated science-fiction thriller film written and directed by Richard Linklater; it is based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick. The film tells the story of identity and deception in

a near-future dystopia constantly under intrusive high-tech police surveillance in the midst of a drug addiction epidemic.

The film was shot digitally and then animated using interpolated rotoscope, an animation technique in which animators trace over the original footage frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films, giving the finished result a distinctive animated look.

The film features the voices of Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder. Steven Soderbergh and

George Clooney are among the executive producers

"Donna" meets with a fellow police officer, and they discuss how New-Path is secretly responsible for the manufacture and distribution of Substance D. Donna expresses her growing ethical aversion to their police work, in which they deliberately recruited Arctor — without his knowledge — to become addicted to D; his health sacrificed so that he might eventually enter a New-Path rehabilitation center unnoticed as a genuine addict, and collect incriminating evidence of New-Path's D farms. Donna and Mike debate whether Arctor's mind will recover enough to grasp the situation.

New-Path sends Arctor to a

labor camp at an isolated farm, where he mindlessly repeats what others tells him

Tending to corn crops

Arctor discovers

hidden rows of the blue flowers that produce D

He secretly hides one flower in his boot, to bring to his friends at his next holiday from the farm.

Philip K. Dick is still one of today’s most read and appreciated science fiction writers, at least according to Lekla Kucukalic, to whom the author of A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Dick’s work hours were as filled with music as were some of his works. In “The Preserving Machine,” a 1953 story, a scientist invents a machine which encodes musical pieces and transforms them into living organisms, even animals, in order to preserve them from the imminent destruction of civilization. The scientist didn’t take into account (and here lies Dick’s mastery of the plot twist) that the “discs” encoded into these living creatures also evolve and adapt, such that the music they contain was entirely lost.

A disease called Morgellons, a creepy skin disease that involves little bugs a bug-like sensation under the skin, and the websites associated with it are just a viral marketing campaign for the upcoming movie A Scanner Darkly. Michael Shostack of The Halting Point has collected some information pointing to the likelihood the disease is, in fact his opinion, a viral campaign. Shostack, who, since one never knows when it comes to virals, may actually be part of the viral campaign, points to a Slashdot story which says "Imagine having a disease that is so controversial that doctors refuse to treat you." The Slashdot story leads to a June 2005 Popular Mechanics story about the disease which has, reportedly, been around since 2002 when websites (1, 2) about the disease began appearing.

That's pretty much how I feel about it, it seems straightforward but there are a handful of things that 'give me pause.' Which also seems to be how the CDC feel, since they currently give an absolutely neutral explanation of the phenomena.

I don't have or know anyone with Morgellons, I just find medical oddities interesting and came upon this. Apparently it's in the movie 'A Scanner Darkly'. I would like to know if anyone on reddit has any more insight on the topic.

CDC to Launch Study on Unexplained Illness

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Division of Research launched a study to learn about an unexplained skin condition known as Morgellons. Persons who suffer from this condition report a range of symptoms including non-healing skin lesions associated with the emergence of fibers or solid material from the skin, abnormal skin sensations (such as stinging and biting or pins and needles) and non-cutaneous symptoms such as difficulty concentrating and short-term memory loss. Researchers hope to learn more about who might be affected, what symptoms they experience, and factors that may contribute to their illness.

"We earnestly want to learn more about this unexplained illness which impacts the lives of those who suffer from it," said Dr. Michele Pearson, principal investigator leading the study for CDC. "Those who suffer have questions, and we want to help them."

CDC will identify patients in Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Health Plan to enroll in the study. The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research was awarded a $338,000 contract to assist CDC in this investigation because of the organization’s location in a geographic area where self-reported cases are concentrated, the size of the patient population to draw from (Kaiser Permanente covers approximately 30 percent of the Northern California population), and its ability to systematically identify Kaiser Permanente patients who may have this unexplained illness.

"CDC is taking a multifaceted approach to this investigation with other external partners including the Armed Forces Pathology Institute," Dr. Pearson said. "We have a team of epidemiologists, laboratorians, and pathologists to carry out the study," Dr. Pearson added. The primary goals of the investigation are to better describe the clinical and epidemiological features of this condition and to generate hypothesis about possible risk factors.

The investigation may take 12 months or longer to complete. Initially investigators will identify and recruit participants and collect detailed information on participants' symptoms and potential factors that may contribute to the condition. Later eligible participants will undergo detailed clinical evaluations, including a general medical examination, dermatologic examination, mental health examination, skin biopsies, and multiple blood tests.

Results of this investigation will most likely be published in CDC's weekly bulletin called the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report or a peer-reviewed scientific journal. A designated web site and voice message line with prerecorded messages (404-718-1199) has been established and will provide updates about the investigation and new information as it becomes available. Interested persons are encouraged to visit the CDC’s Unexplained Dermopathy/Morgellons web site (www.cdc.gov/unexplaineddermopathy) to obtain current information about CDC activities related to this condition.

I have this.

It sucks really bad.

Not a day goes by where you can just forget about this.

I have had it now 6 years this month.

May have been in me since 2002-2003 as I look back, but it did not really show until 2014.

I swam at least 4 days a week outside in AZ open sky awimming pool.

Lots of chem trails, but at the time I did not even know what that was. Just thought the sky and planes were strange.

are you suggesting like the doctors that we do this to ourselves?

None of these pics are of me, but I have taken many pics that look identical of my own skin.

This is real and frightening stuff. THE CDC knows. Pesticide companies know.

These are lesions, with craters, and all kinds of weird shit comes out, painful like glass shards.

I don't smoke, don't drink, am a born again Christian and zero risk type behaviors.

It just came onto my body and I rember the day it "exploded" in my body, felt as if a million ants on skin, but nothing. Then month by month the skin eruptions, scratch lines, like a burrow, then lesions holes, and scabs that takes months to go away only to move a few inches and start again.
