Farms In Maryland, Delaware to Destroy 2 Million Chickens Due to Staffing Shortages
The chickens will not be processed for meat
The trade group the Delmarva Poultry Industry said that every poultry plant on the Delmarva Peninsula has struggled with reduced worker attendance. The reasons include workers being sick with the coronavirus and people following guidance to stay home if sick.
The Delmarva Peninsula includes parts of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
The trade group said that one unidentified company has become the first to do what's called “depopulation.” The trade group said the company was unable to find other options, such as allowing another company to take the chickens.

Is there anything we can do to make these guys let people take up to a dozen of these chickens and raise them at home for eggs and/or meat, no questions asked? At the very least we'd prevent what basically amounts to a giant blood sacrifice to this giant panic. Publish the addresses for the pickup locations and let people drive in and pick 'em up: stay in your car until it's your turn, wear a mask when you get your birds. Bet you'd see cars lining up to do it.
