Dear POTUS, Q and Q Team,
I work in 2 NYC nursing homes, and want POTUS to know what we have gone through on our “front lines,” which have been vilified by both the press and Gov. Cuomo. Have there been deaths? Yes. Were there deaths in hospitals? Yes. Yet the hospitals were made to be heroes and and nursing homes are death houses.
Our dedicated staff have been working double shifts, late hours, 80 hour weeks in some cases. I’ve dealt with residents of the nursing home who came back from the hospital minimally responsive, unable to eat, and without a means of nutrition. I’ve seen a full spectrum of patients. It was stressful, trying to meet not only the needs of the COVID 19+ residents, but the emotional needs of the other residents who were missing their family and their normal routine.
Both companies I work for did their very best to treat all residents at the highest level. I was shocked to hear Cuomo say he wasn’t aware of what was going on in the nursing homes. I would yell at the TV when numbers of people discharged from hospitals were lauded, mistakenly presented as “cured” of the virus. What was the actual number sent to the nursing homes vs sent home? What was the actual number, still infectious, sent to the nursing homes, where almost all residents have either advanced age and/or multiple co-morbidities?
Keep in mind, our residents become part of us; we are a family. We’ve known someone’s mother, father, brother, sister for months or years, not a few days or weeks like in hospitals. The losses are felt harder.
Finally, NYS Department of Health is now going to nursing homes and doing PPE checks, reportedly citing the homes at the Immediate Jeopardy level. Talk about insult to injury! Rather than fining the homes, why not ask: how can we help you?
Please ask Cuomo to stop with the fines and step up and treat us as front line workers, rather than the stepchildren.
Thank you, sir. You’re dedication and stamina have been an inspiration. Stay well. We love you!Dear POTUS, Q and Q Team,
