In 1968, Duncan Campbell gave an account of the 1949 revival that started in the Scottish Hebrides Islands. He was quick to tell how two elderly women were the spark that ignited that fire of revival.
As often happens, God uses someone unexpected to accomplish His work. In this instance, the people God chose were Peggy, age 84 and Christine, age 82. Neither were able to leave their home; Peggy was blind and Christine could not stand up straight due to arthritis.
The two sisters had become burdened that not a single young person attended church. Peggy and Christine could not attend church either, but they chose to make their small cottage a place of prayer for a move of God. As they read the word of God, they were gripped by Isaiah 44:3, “For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground.” The ladies prayed this verse in faith often from 10 pm to 3 or 4 am.
Late one night, Peggy had a vision of the church filled with young people. This prompted her to tell a local minister, “You must do something about it.” He agreed to call others together to pray in conjunction with Peggy and Christine. The others gathered in a barn while the sisters prayed in their cottage.
One night in the barn, as the intercessors were praying for God to “pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground”, a deacon stood and read from Psalm 24. He then, turned to the minister and said, “It seems to me to be so much humbug to be praying as we are praying, to be waiting as we are waiting, if we ourselves are not rightly related to God.” The deacon then asked the Lord, “Are my hands clean? Is my heart pure?” He then fell to his knees in repentance before God.
Revival broke out in the barn as everyone there began to fall on their face before God and repent their sins. Soon the power of God swept the island and everyone was aware of the power of God. Duncan Campbell was invited to the island to preach for two weeks and ended up staying two years. The revival radically changed the island and its culture.
The youth were greatly impacted as well. One evening as the people gathered in the church, the power of God was evident again. There were about one hundred young people at a dance who were suddenly drawn to leave and go to the church. Hundreds of people, including youth, began to repent and get right with God. The meeting lasted until four in the morning.
The revival lasted for over three years and touched countless lives. This move of God reminds us that He is able to do what He has done before and He is also willing to use anyone who is willing to commit to labor in prayer.
