The Department of Defence has jumped at the chance to prove the worth of its new artificial intelligence capabilities amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the move coming just months after the approval of a set of guidelines for the ‘ethical’ use of AI technology on the battlefield.
The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC), the entity created in 2018 to oversee and coordinate nearly all the Pentagon’s AI-related efforts, has come up with a prototype tool which can be plugged into logistics and supply-chain data to sniff out potential supply shortages ahead of time amid the COVID-19 crisis, Defense One has reported, citing officials familiar with the effort.
The tool, named ‘Salus’, after the Roman goddess of welfare, health and prosperity, is touted as being capable of using predictive analytics to find areas where supply shortages are expected, from the level of individual stores to zip codes, states and even the entire continental United States.

This week, they want your booze.
WHO says that alcohol compromises the immune system. And since we are fighting a virus, they think that prohibition is necessary.
In fact, alcohol restrictions can be justified by governments for the same reason coronavirus lockdowns are needed.
WHO notes that even in good times, alcohol is the cause of major health issues, addiction, and death. Alcohol accounts for 3 million deaths per year worldwide– far more than the coronavirus.
So it almost seems like WHO’s argument for banning alcohol has little to do with the coronavirus.

U.S. Panic Shutdown Will Wipe Out 40% Of The Economy, Unemployment Will Hit 27 Million: CBO
The U.S. economy will plunge by 40% this financial quarter and the unemployment rate will soar to 14%, the Congressional Budget Office said Friday.
The unemployment rate will eventually rise to 27% — a number not seen since the Great Depression — and the recession caused by shutting down the economy during the coronavirus panic will nearly quadruple the federal budget deficit to $3.7 trillion, the CBO said.
There’s more bad news. The 2020 budget deficit will explode after four coronavirus response bills — with a price tag of $2.7 trillion and rising — will balloon the national debt to nearly $25 trillion in just the remaining six months of the current fiscal year, the report says.
The rate of debt and deficit haven’t happened since World War II.

Eric Holthaus, a popular online climate-change activist, points out that the allegedly positive environmental effects of the coronavirus crisis are on “roughly the same pace that the IPCC says we need to sustain every year until 2030 to be on pace to limit global warming to 1.5C and hit the Paris climate goals.”
“We’re doing it. It’s possible!” he adds.
It’s nice to see an environmentalist finally acknowledging the inherent economic tradeoff of their vision. Holthaus is absolutely correct that implementing a plan like the Green New Deal would hold approximately the same gruesome economic consequences as the coronavirus crisis — except, of course, forever. The point of modern environmentalism, as Greta Thunberg has hinted, is the destruction of wealth. This process is what Holthaus, and others, euphemistically call “degrowth.”
Holthaus, who doesn’t celebrate coronavirus, reminds us that merely to keep pace with the IPCC recommendations on carbon emissions, Americans would be compelled to shut down virtually the entire economy. They would need to restrict air travel, place most Americans under virtual house arrest (or raze all the suburbs), halt international and interstate trade, destroy millions of jobs, shut down large swaths of manufacturing, and stop people from using their cars — or buying gas.

Watch: Russian chopper flies directly over US military in Syria
BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:40 A.M.) – A Russian chopper was filmed last week flying over a U.S. military vehicle in an undisclosed part of northeastern Syria.
Since the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reached a military agreement in September 2019, the Russian military has had access to several areas across the northern region of Syria.
In turn, the Russian military has found themselves competing with the U.S. over different parts of the strategic M-4 Highway (Latakia-Hasakah Highway) that stretches across the northern part of the country.
The Russian military has even headquartered a large number of their forces in Syria at the Qamishli Airport, which is close to the U.S. Armed Forces in the Al-Hasakah Governorate.
With this move, it came as no surprise when a Russian chopper was filmed flying over a U.S. military convoy last week.
In a video that has since been shared on social media, a Russian M-8 chopper was seen flying over a U.S. military convoy that was traveling along an undisclosed roadway in northeastern Syria.

Students sue University of Miami and Drexel University over tuition controversy
Students suing universities for tuition adjustments claim that virtual classes cost universities less but are also less effective for both students and professors.
Lawsuits outline that students are paying for services they are no longer able to benefit from.
Two students, one at the University of Miami and one at Drexel University, have initiated lawsuits against their colleges over not decreasing tuition costs for virtual classes due to COVID-19. The concerns come after the closing of college campuses around the country and the switch to an online learning education system.
Students Adelaide Dixon at the University of Miami and Grainger Rickenbacker at Drexel University both claim that tuition costs still include university services such as in-class lectures from professors, campus facility access, and general campus-based mandatory fees.

Under Deng Xiaoping (premier of China, 1978–1992), the PRC had begun to set up empowerment zones and allowed capitalist multinational corporations to operate within their borders. McDonald's has some nice fast food outlets in China, and many of our medicines as well as our Barbie dolls are manufactured there. Chinese restrictions on child-bearing won the hearts of Western liberals, who are convinced that over-population combined with climate change (formerly "global warming") is the cause of poverty on our planet. "Sustainable" use of resources became a new mantra. For many, sustainability means capitalism and communism working together side by side. How else can we arrive at the fulfillment of the Marxian principle "from each according to his ability to each according to his need"?
The highly educated of the West neatly combined all these avenues of discourse — climate change, population control, compatibility of communism and capitalism — with the widely accepted utilitarian doctrine of the greatest good for the greatest number (believed by most if not all of Western Civilization). Our own left-wing/liberal elite easily accepted Mill's belief that the "greatest good" could best be discerned by the more educated, informed classes of people. What a neat package!

Powell also said more exculpatory evidence in the case will surface in the future.

Fort Bragg leaders say COVID-19 cases in ‘single digits’
About 75% of all Fort Bragg-associated cases of the coronavirus have recovered, officials said at a virtual town hall meeting Thursday.
Fort Bragg has not released its total cases after Department of Defense guidelines March 31 instructing individuals not to release case counts for operational security reasons.
As of Monday, Kurilla said Fort Bragg’s total related cases for service members, Department of Army civilians, dependents, contractors and retirees combined is “in the single digits.”
Fort Bragg continues to release numbers to local health departments.
Lt. Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, commander of the 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, said “thoughts and prayers” are with the friends and family members of the Fort Bragg Department of Army and civilian contractor who died from the virus last week.

160,000 Nintendo accounts breached
April 24 (UPI) – Hackers have breached 160,000 Nintendo accounts since the beginning of April, the gaming company revealed Friday.
The Japanese-based company said it was tipped off to the breach after users complained of funds missing from their accounts or that their money was used to buy Fortnite's virtual currency.
Additionally, users' nicknames, birthdates, countries and email addresses may have been accessed.
"We sincerely apologize to our customers and related parties for any inconvenience and concern, a statement from Nintendo said. "In the future, we will make further efforts to strengthen security and ensure safety so that similar events do not occur."
In response to the hacking, Nintendo said it is disabling the ability for users to log in to a Nintendo account through older Nintendo Network IDs. The company also said all affected accounts will have their passwords reset.

Abdel-Majed Abdel-Bary and two unnamed associates were arrested Monday by Spanish police in the Mediterranean port city of Almeria after coordination with the UK domestic intelligence service MI5, which had been attempting to track him since he left the UK to join ISIS in Syria in 2015.

The source, who declined to be named due to the private nature of the debates, said that the US has been insisting on holding the World Health Organisation (WHO) accountable for its early activities in handling the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed over 190,000 people across the globe, including close to 50,000 in the US.
China, on the other hand, strongly refuses to discuss proposals to investigate the WHO, the source said.

Dr. Dan Erickson of Bakersfield, CA, an ER physician, just dropped multiple bombshells that are diametrically opposed to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s guidance.
He emphatically stated we no longer need to stay at home or shutter businesses. He believes COV-19 is no more dangerous than the flu. Quarantining is a health hazard in of itself.
