That said, sum ting wong at that zoo. Dose this apply to other zoos? This from 2012:

Columbus Zoo director resigns

For the fourth time in five years, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has a new leader.

The zoo announced yesterday that executive director Dale Schmidt resigned on Tuesday and Tom Stalf, chief operating officer, had been appointed interim director.

Tim May, chairman of the zoo board, said Schmidt and the board “came to a mutual agreement” during a special meeting on Tuesday.

“He decided it was time for him to move on and we were OK with that,” May said.

Schmidt, 55, left for personal reasons, according to a zoo press release. He could not be reached for comment yesterday.

He started at the zoo in 2008 as chief operating officer under Jeff Swanagan, who succeeded longtime director Jerry Borin. When Swanagan died of a heart attack in June 2009, Schmidt was appointed interim director. Five months later, after a nationwide search, the board removed the interim tag.

Much of Schmidt’s experience was with aquariums, including as president of the Oregon Coast Aquarium and director of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. In Columbus, he presided over the opening of the Polar Frontier exhibit and the zoo’s takeover of operations at The Wilds animal preserve in Muskingum County.

Stalf, 44, came to the zoo as chief operating officer in July 2010, at the recommendation of director emeritus Jack Hanna. For the previous 15 years, he had been director of the Niabi Zoo in the village of Coal Valley, Ill., just south of the Quad Cities along the Iowa and Illinois border.

Stalf said he had known and worked with Hanna, and “when the opportunity came to join the Columbus Zoo, it was a no-brainer.”

He said he and Hanna share a similar goal: “To engage our guests and tell them the story of how beautiful these animals are and how we can allow them to continue to live in the wild.”
