Every major extinction in our fossil record was caused by extreme cataclysmic conditions, not "natural selection", and this was also what caused rapid bursts of "new life" to follow immediately after, thanks to mass exposure to the high doses of Electromagnetic radiation associated with the types of catastrophes that caused those mass extinctions.
We're seeing mass extinctions, now, only once again, these are not do to "natural selection", but rather poisoning of the natural environment, due to centuries worth of corporate exploitation for private gains. You can't really say that humans are more "fit" than the animals and plants whom we've invaded the space of, because humans are killing ourselves with the very environments we've been building "for our own protection". Mostly out of pride, but also mountains of ignorance, we chose to ignore these facts, while greedy overlords continue to freely rape and plunder whatever they please, then send us a bill as they threaten our lives and family if we don't pay. Once again, that's not "survival of the fittest", that's greedy fuckers being greedy and paying corrupt politicians and legislators to allow it, and then ordering them to distract everyone who's supposed to be working to "protect us" to look away, as they go after civilians to strip moar and moar of our rights away.
Darwin's theories were brought about with purpose of destroying our peaceful and civilized world. If you don't see it, look into when they theories arose, who was funding, what other "new" ideologies were being funded at the time, along with the other genuine scientific minds who out right opposed the theories of Darwin based on lack of evidence, numerous observable contradictions, etc. Simply put, civilization would've never arose from "survival of the fittest" mentality, as it directly opposes the organization and teamwork required to build a Nation/civilization/settlement. Dawin's false claims also encourage people to act out their "primitive" instincts, which has led to some rather disgusting behaviors/practices that eventually revealed themselves after decades worth of false teachings were made part of a "required learning" curriculum.
