Pilot dies in Chandler plane crash

Mar 12, 2010

Authorities say a World War II-era plane crashed Thursday afternoon as it was trying to land at Chandler's Stellar Airpark, killing the pilot and charring at least one hangar at the facility.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine P-51D Mustang crashed into the side of a hangar at the airpark about 1:20 p.m.

Authorities evacuated nearby hangars after one caught fire following the crash. The blaze was quickly extinguished and fire crews sifted through the debris to determine if there were any other victims although none were immediately found.

Gregor says the circumstances of the crash remain unclear and FAA investigators were en route to the airport. Witnesses say the plane appeared to be coming in too fast for its attempted landing, touched down short of the runway and cartwheeled into the hangar.

The name of the pilot was not immediately released. The East Valley Tribune reported the plane was registered to Hirani Oil Arizona, which appears to be a sales and property management company in Chandler.
