One of the CIA’s most successful recent films The Interview was at the centre of this hack that certainly wasn’t carried out by North Korea. The emails provide yet more confirmation of the CIA’s involvement in this production, and by implication in the hack and the rest of the activities surrounding it.
We already know that officials from the RAND corporation and the State Department had reviewed the script, that writer/producer/star Seth Rogen had said that there were government consultants on the film that he was ‘convinced were CIA’. The film itself includes the signature establishing shot of Langley that you only get via the CIA and with their permission once they’ve reviewed your script:
Since the film’s release the operation to send tens of thousands of copies into North Korea via hot air balloon has begun in earnest. This ‘activist project’ so closely resembles the CIA’s Cold War propaganda efforts that to deny their involvement would be laughable. The whole ‘balloons into North Korea’ angle was mentioned in emails from the Sony hack – emails involving Bruce Bennett of the RAND corporation and Michael Lynton.
