I saw the Melungeons, and the extreme poverty gives me doubt about this explanation. In the middle of nowhere, trailer type living, nothing of value in the yards. Skin shade would match what the description gives. From a clerk at the store who is not Melungeon, the Melugeons are the kindest people she ever met. Always available and checking in to make sure she is safe at the convenient store.
