Note on NYC deaths,

 

NYC is about 8.2 million. For a life expectancy of 76 years that averages to almost 300 deaths per day.

 

Add on an extra amount due to covid-19.

 

But the hospitals are holding on to the bodies and not releasing them for funeral as is normally done. So whether 300 or 400 deaths per day and not releasing the bodies, yes, they would "pile up" as the NY authorities put it.
