Top NYC Doctor on Front Lines of COVID-19 Pandemic Commits Suicide, Family Says
The head of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in Manhattan took her own life Sunday, her family says. Dr. Lorna M. Breen was 49-years-old. Her father, Dr. Philip Breen told the New York Times his daughter had no history of mental illness but did indicate she was overwhelmed by her job on the front lines of the Coronavirus pandemic. “She tried to do her job, and it killed her,” Lorna’s father told the Times.“She was truly in the trenches on the front line.”
Lorna died in Charlottesville, Virginia where she was staying with family after contracting the virus herself. At one point, she attempted to go back to work but hospital officials insisted she remain home. “Make sure she’s praised as a hero,” her father said. “She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died.” Dr. Phillip Breen did not exactly say in what manner his daughter committed suicide.
