In a December 2, 2014 speech at the NIH, President Obama predicted a new deadly flu would come in FIVE years.

In the speech he says

“And it also requires us to continue the same path of basic research that is being done here at the NIH that Nancy is a great example of so that if and WHEN a new strain of flu like the Spanish flu crops up FIVE years from now or a decade from now we’ve made the investment and we’re further along to be able to CATCH it.”

Is it possible this was not a slip of the tongue? Is it possible the funding literally went to figuring out a way to transmit the disease from bats to humans? The linked research in this thread implies that that is at least a possibility.
