Looking beyond the coronavirus, military powers jostle for dominance in Indo-Pacific region

Taiwan Strait and South China Sea are settings for China and the US to assert influence and defiance

Analysts warn costly missteps and miscalculations are possible amid rift

This is the fourth in a series exploring the global backlash that China may face as a result of its actions and rhetoric during the coronavirus pandemic. This story examines the outlook from a military viewpoint, including relations in the South China Sea, with China’s neighbours and with the United States.

As the USS Barry, one of the US’ most advanced destroyers, sailed through the Taiwan Strait last Thursday, an officer on board posted a message on Facebook: “They don’t call us the Finest Forward Deployed Destroyer for nothing! Your Bulldogs always have the watch – together, we ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific!”

Based in Yokosuka, Japan, the guided-missile destroyer was no stranger to the sensitive channel separating Taiwan and mainland China. In fact, this was its second passage through the 180km [112-mile]-wide waterway – defined as part of the South China Sea under international protocol – this month.

China threatens Australia’s economy if it investigates coronavirus outbreak

China is warning Australia of an economic hit if it chooses to investigate China’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

Australia has been moving to investigate how China responded to the outbreak of the coronavirus. On Monday, China responded when Chinese ambassador to Australia, Cheng Jingye, said in an interview with The Australian Financial Review that Australia’s inquiry was “dangerous” and further insisted that Chinese citizens would boycott the Australian economy as a result.

“The Chinese public is frustrated, dismayed and disappointed with what Australia is doing now,” Cheng said. “I think in the long term… if the mood is going from bad to worse, people would think ‘Why should we go to such a country that is not so friendly to China? The tourists may have second thoughts. The parents of the students would also think whether this place which they found is not so friendly, even hostile, whether this is the best place to send their kids here.”

Cheng noted Chinese consumers might also reject Australian imports, which could pose a major hit to Australia as China is its largest export market, according to the Australian government.

“Maybe the ordinary people will say ‘Why should we drink Australian wine? Eat Australian beef?” Cheng said.

Who was it that said..What is Truth….kekek

Reality is what we take to be true. What we take to be true is what we believe. What we believe is based upon our perceptions. What we perceive depends upon what we look for. What we look for depends upon what we think. What we think depends upon what we perceive. What we perceive determines what we believe. What we believe determines what we take to be true. Somebody knows

DARPA embarked on the pathbreaking research and development that would lead to stealth technology in the 1970s. A milestone in that R&D trajectory was the production of two demonstrator aircraft by Lockheed in what was called the HAVE BLUE program. This resulted in the first practical combat stealth aircraft, which made its first test flight by the end of 1977. A year later, the company received a contract to scale-up engineering development of what become the F-117 and which became operational in October 1983. In 1976, Northrup received a sole-source grant by DARPA to develop the BSAX aircraft, later named TACIT Blue aircraft, which could operate radar sensors while maintaining its own low radar cross-section. The experimental aircraft first flew in 1982 and the many stealth, radar, and aerodynamic innovations it incorporated laid foundations for development of the B-2 stealth bomber, which was first used in combat in 1999.

Stealth aircraft destroyed key targets in conflicts in Iraq, both in the 1991 Desert Storm operation and in 2003 during Operation Iraqi Freedom; in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001; and in Libya in 2011. Complementing the key contributions of stealth capabilities in these missions was Department of Defense’s use of other technologies, including DARPA-enabled precision-guided munitions deployed by stealth and non-stealth aircraft. Since their initial development and deployment, stealth technologies have been applied to a wide range of weapon systems and military platforms, among them missiles, helicopters, ground vehicles, and ships.

Judge Rules That Virginia Governor’s Gun Range Shut Down is Against the Law

A Virginia judge has ruled that Democrat governor Ralph Northam’s closure of indoor gun ranges due to the coronavirus violates gun right laws in the state.

Judge F. Patrick Yeatts of the 24th Judicial Circuit of Virginia ruled in favor of Lynchburg Range & Training, which challenged Northam’s shutdown order in the court.

The Washington Free Beacon reports that Judge Yeatts said the governor’s emergency powers are limited under Virginia law and cannot restrict the “otherwise lawful possession, carrying, transportation, sale, or transfer of firearms.”

“The governor appears to argue that, when he declares a state of emergency, he can ignore any law that limits his power, even laws designed to limit his power during a state of emergency,” Yeatts wrote. “The Court cannot agree with such an expansive interpretation of the Governor’s authority.”

Israeli airstrikes blast Iranian & Hezbollah positions in Syria

The Israeli Air Force conducted a heavy airstrike on a Syrian military airport outside of Damascus, before dawn on Monday, hitting several positions that base Iranian troops.

Early reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that seven people were killed, four Iranian troops and three civilians, while four other people were wounded, including a child.

Syrian military reports stated that their air defense units had “confronted the Israeli aggression.” As is typical for the vast majority of airstrikes in Syria, the IDF neither confirmed nor denied responsibility. Yet, this latest airstrike — the second one in less than a week and the third in 10 days in Syria — comes just a day after Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett esssentially told the media that military action was impending.

In an interview with 103FM in Israel, Bennett said, “Keep your ears open. We’ve gone from a policy of blocking [Iran] to pushing it out.” Bennett also said that Israel is “more determined” than the Iranians, adding that “[the situation has] been good for [Iran, Hezbollah, and Syria] recently.”

The SOHR, a U.K.–based Syrian civil war monitor, said the targets were “military posts for Iranian militias in the Palmyra desert.”

The Lakers Got Federal Aid and Your Corner Shop Didn’t

The pre-coronavirus days, the Los Angeles Lakers was one of the most valuable and profitable sports franchises on the planet. Forbes estimated last year that the team earned $147 million in 2018 and would fetch about $3.7 billion in a sale. A trust controlled by the children of the late Jerry Buss, a wealthy investor, owns a majority stake in the team. Other co-owners include Philip Anschutz, a billionaire with a broad portfolio of holdings in energy, real estate, media, entertainment and other industries; Edward Roski Jr., a successful commercial real estate developer; and Patrick Soon-Shiong, who owns the Los Angeles Times.

The Lakers, as ESPN reported on Monday, received $4.6 million in bailout funds from the federal government as part of the $349 billion Paycheck Protection Program meant to backstop struggling small businesses sideswiped by Covid-19. The Lakers operation has fewer than 500 employees, which qualifies it as a small business under the government’s aid guidelines. But the Lakers hardly seem as immediately vulnerable, or without access to other resources, as, say, your corner grocer, baker, barber or dry cleaner. The Lakers, undoubtedly aware of a wave of recent disclosures about unlikely companies receiving PPP funds, told ESPN it returned the $4.6 million.

NYC ER DOCTOR: ‘I’ve Worked The Coronavirus Front Line — And I Say It’s Time To Start Opening Up

Dr. Daniel G. Murphy is chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital in The Bronx. New York City is ground zero for the COVID-19.

So Murphy knows a thing or two about the virus.

Murphy has been in the ER every day for the last few weeks, either supervising or providing direct care, the doctor wrote in a piece for The New York Post. “I contracted a COVID-19 infection very early in the outbreak, as did two of my daughters, one of whom is a nurse. We are all well, thank God.”

Murphy said the virus has been the worst health care disaster in his 30-year career, but now, he said, “the lasting impact is what worries me the most. And it’s why I now believe we should end the lockdown and rapidly get back to work.”

ICE Deports Pakistani National Who Attempted To Launder Money From Al-Qaida

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers removed a Pakistani national who conspired to launder terrorist financing, marking the agency’s latest “high-profile removal.”

Saifullah Anjum Ranjha, a 53-year-old Pakistani national who served the past eight years in prison, was placed into a deportation flight at the San Antonio International Airport on Monday, according to a press release from the agency. ICE’s Enforcement Removal officers escorted Ranjha and ultimately handed him over to Pakistani authorities in Islamabad.

Ranjha, a former business owner in Washington, D.C., who held legal permanent status in the United States, pleaded guilty in 2008 to laundering more than $2.2 million in funds that he believed were the proceeds of illegal activities by al-Qaida. His apprehension was part of a large-scale operation by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations that led to 42 arrests between 2008 and 2011.

Appeals Court Reinstates California Ammo Ban

Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals blocks lower court decision barring background checks

The California law mandating background checks for ammunition sales is back on despite a judge's warning that the law is unconstitutional.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued an emergency stay reinstating the law on Friday night, just one day after a federal judge declared that the law violated the Second Amendment. Under the ruling, California residents are once again barred from purchasing firearms ammunition across state lines or without a background check until the case is decided.

Imperial College Prof Neil Ferguson Accused Of ‘Patchy Record Of Modeling Pandemics’

Professor Neil Ferguson started the COVID-19 panic with vastly overstated predictions of widespread deaths, while specifying erroneous public policies to ‘flatten the curve’. It turns out that this isn’t the first time he screwed up!

In 2001, he released an incorrect model of Foot and Mouth disease in England and called for a massive cull of livestock. Rural Britain was subsequently devastated by the loss of over 6 million animals.

Outrageously, Ferguson and other data scientists (WHO, CDC, etc.) who followed his gross negligence are now claiming that deaths have been reduced because their recommendations were followed to shut down the entire global economy. ⁃ TN Editor

Experts have cast doubt on the work of a key scientist whose apocalyptic prediction that coronavirus could kill 500,000 Britons led Boris Johnson to decide he had to lock down the country.

Professor Neil Ferguson, director of the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis at Imperial College, London, authored a report which forecast that terrible death toll if nothing was done to stop the spread of the disease.

Bill Gates Worked To End Livestock Production, Pushed Lab Grown Meat

Bill Gates and food giant Tyson heavily backed lab grown meat research.

As the United States faces unprecedented meat shortages due to processing plants going offline in response to the coronavirus, a long-standing globalist agenda to halt meat consumption is being fulfilled.

Tyson foods recently warned that the food supply chain is “breaking.”

Lockdowns have created a situation in which farmers have nowhere to send their product, and in turn millions of animals are being slaughtered. Additionally, vegetables that would normally end up on store shelves are rotting in the field.

Despite this reality, Twitter has announced that talk of food shortages will be censored.

Lab grown meat producers are hoping that the COVID-19 outbreak could boost public acceptance.

As Bill Gates was working to establish a worldwide digital ID system prior to the pandemic, he was also working to end meat production and funding lab grown “meat.”
