Someone posted a video on the old 8chan advanced tech page of a Nasa rover using a type of drill that oscillated back and forth and pressed, rather than drilled into stone at a rate that seems to resonate at the right frequency and shatter the bonds of the stone at a molecular level. This could explain why soft metals could have been used in this type of resonance drilling, no friction or excess heat would have been created. This Russian video is on the right track I think.
