Any foreign nation is a threat.
The problem is that nations have survival needs and other such things that can be leveraged. Russia can be driven into a bit of a corner where they have no choice but to risk war.
That is the thing about real warfare - it is possible to underestimate your opponent. When the guns come out and the bullets start flying, a bunch of rag-tag Yahoos with some cunning and luck can blast a strategically important thing that flips the war on its head.
Russia can and will take the gamble that they can simply wallop the cabal upside the head if given no other option.
In the meantime, the cabal is going to try and build the case that Russia needs to be driven back from its territory acquisition. Likely using the tried old trick of human rights violations as they did in Yugoslavia.
All of the NATO positions maintained in Europe are geared to support a military offensive, not a defensive operation. The sizing, positioning, and equipping through the times has indicated a desire to invade Russia more so than to defend against a land offensive from Russia.
