Washington mental hospital staff call virus testing unsafe

SEATTLE (AP) — Workers exposed to the coronavirus at a troubled psychiatric hospital in Washington state tell The Associated Press that a flawed testing process likely produced inaccurate results and exposed them to the virus again.

They say they were crowded into a small space where few wore masks and told to swirl a swab inside their noses.

The method is meant only for people showing symptoms, and the staffers say none of them did. They say it's another failure to protect staff and patients.

The facility has a pattern of attacks and lost its federal funding after multiple investigations.

Officials defend the test as accurate and say they're working to regain employees' trust.

SEATTLE — Washington's ‘Stay Home' order is set to expire in less than a week, but Governor Jay Inslee said a majority of restrictions will stay in place.

In a new interview, Inslee said one of his biggest concerns is the number of new infections we're still seeing each day.

The Washington State Health Department confirmed 156 new cases Tuesday, raising the total to 13,842.

At least 786 people have now died, an increase of 16 from Monday.

In less than a week, Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order will expire, but in a special edition interview with TVW, he makes it clear people in Washington should not expect the status quo to be much different.

“Under neither model would we be in a position to everything be in normal life on May 5th,” Inslee said. “That’s just not in the cards.

SEATTLE — Gov. Jay Inslee told KIRO 7 that President Donald Trump downplayed the danger of coronavirus in February and hurt Washington State’s ability to respond to the pandemic.

"The day that he sort of called this a hoax, I issued an emergency declaration for the state of Washington. Those are two very contradictory messages and I do think his messaging to some degree debilitated and made ours more difficult to convince people how deadly this disease was,” said Inslee.
