'This is deeper than a cover-up': #MeToo activist slams Democrats and liberal media amid Biden sexual assault allegation

Actress and #MeToo activist Rose McGowan slammed Democrats and liberal media amid an accusation of sexual assault against presidential candidate Joe Biden. In a nighttime social media post Wednesday, McGowan issued a scathing rebuke against liberal media and the Democratic Party for their reaction to allegations of sexual assault leveled by former Biden staffer Tara Reade against the former vice president.

"I was always told it was the Democratic Party that were the good guys, that our papers were @nyt & @washingtonpost & we as a family loved listening to @allthingsconsidered & we'd talk about how much we loved @iraglass' voice. But now I know too much," McGowan posted in a series of pictures on Twitter. "I feel really quite a sense of loss tonight. I am not a cynical person, but America goddamn. Republicans have always been painted as the bad guys, and I've always seen them more as a cult, but now I realize so are the democrats and the media. Macro and Micro," McGowan continued. "This is deeper than a cover-up."

McGowan has been unafraid to pounce at other Democrats supporting Biden amid the allegations. In early April, McGowan slammed Alyssa Milano, a fellow #MeToo activist and former co-star in the television series Charmed, for supporting Biden and using a conservative argument during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings. "You are a fraud. This is about holding the media accountable. You go after Trump & Kavanaugh saying Believe Victims, you are a lie. You have always been a lie. The corrupt DNC is in on the smear job of Tara Reade, so are you. SHAME," she tweeted then.

Biden was recently accused of sexual assault by Tara Reade, his Senate aide from 1992 to 1993. According to Reade, Biden ran his hand underneath her skirt and penetrated her with his fingers. The former vice president has not yet been personally asked about the accusation despite appearances on cable news. A growing list of media personalities, progressive activists, supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and others have demanded that Biden personally address the allegations.

Earlier this month, Reade filed a formal complaint with the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department regarding the incident, but did not specifically mention Biden by name. As of Wednesday, police are no longer investigating her complaint. “This is an inactive case, and there are no additional details to provide,” a police spokesman told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday, providing no additional comments. Though the incident passed the district's statute of limitations, Reade said she is willing to risk criminal penalty, as filing false police reports are illegal.

Federal appeals court rules voter ID law unconstitutional

A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that Kansas can’t require voters to provide proof of citizenship when they register to vote. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a permanent injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Julia Robinson in 2018 and found that Kansas’s requirement to provide identification when registering to vote violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment as well as the National Voter Registration Act. The law required Kansans who were registering to vote to provide documents proving their U.S. citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a passport.

Kansas argued that it has an interest in protecting election integrity by preventing voter fraud and that providing proof of citizenship is not a significant burden on voters. The court agreed that Kansas had a legitimate interest in protecting election integrity but found that the 67 instances of voter fraud since 1999 did not justify the burden placed on Kansans. “The district court found that even under calculations from one of the Secretary’s experts, the estimated number of suspended applications that belonged to noncitizens was ‘statistically indistinguishable from zero,’ while ‘more than 99% of the individuals’ whose voter-registration applications were suspended were citizens who presumably would have been able to vote but for the DPOC requirement,” the court noted in its 84-page ruling.

Kansas’s voter registration law was championed by then-Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who was selected by President Trump to lead his commission on voter fraud. Kobach was ordered by Robinson to take remedial legal education classes. Kobach called the decision “the essence of judicial activism, setting aside the plain meaning of the law and replacing it with a subjective, policy-based balancing test.” He added that it was “highly likely” that the Supreme Court would overturn the 10th Circuit Court’s ruling if Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt appeals.

Dale Ho, the director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, praised the ruling, saying, “We are gratified the court struck it down and now call upon Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab to turn the page on Kris Kobach’s sorry legacy of voter suppression, drop any further appeals, and work with us collaboratively in the interests of all Kansas voters.”
