Washington National Guard joins COVID-19 contact tracing effort as UW develops app

We’re going to have 1,500 people, including members of the Washington National Guard, to work on that effort.

The contact tracing initiative that we are embarking on now is really unprecedented for the public health system,” said Dr. Kathy Lofy, state health officer. “I mean we are thinking way beyond what we could have imagined having in our public health system. I think that right there says just the difference between where we were at the beginning of the outbreak and the type of response we feel we need to have moving forward.

To that end, researchers from the University of Washington along with volunteers from Microsoft announced the development of a contact-tracing app geared to help public health agencies without compromising privacy.

“What’s going to be important is finding a way to coordinate with public health officials, so positives can be certified,” said Sham Kakade, a University of Washington professor who’s helping design the app.

‘CovidSafe’ is based off a series of privacy and security guidelines that the team outlined in a white paper posted earlier this month.

Kakade said a team of roughly 50 people have been working on the app since mid-March.

“At the end of the day, this is one of the biggest crises of our generation,” he said.

He said the app is largely built, but won’t be ready to roll out and be effective until Washington has the testing capacity to support it.
