C and D : Found in Alice in Wonderland

Ch 3: A Caucus-Race and a Long Tale

Alice speaking to the Mouse

You promised to tell me your history, you know,’ said Alice, and why it is you hate–C and D, she added in a whisper, half afraid that it would be offended again.

Mine is a long and a sad tale!’ said the Mouse, turning to Alice, and sighing.

Mouse explains why he hates C and D

Fury = D in this story (Fury is a Dog, D)

The Mouse's tale (Published version):

Fury said to a mouse,

That he met in the house,

“Let us both go to law:

I will prosecute YOU.

–Come, I’ll take no denial;

We must have a trial:

For really this morning I’ve nothing to do.”

Said the mouse to the cur,

“Such a trial, dear Sir,

With no jury or judge, would be wasting our breath.”

“I’ll be judge, I’ll be jury,”

Said cunning old Fury:

“I’ll try the whole cause, and CONDEMN you to DEATH.”

[C]ondemn you to [D]eath

Nowadays the world is becoming increasingly materialistic, and mankind is reaching toward the very zenith of external progress, driven by an insatiable desire for power and vast possessions. Yet by this vain striving for perfection in a world where every thing is relative, they wander ever further away from inward peace and happiness of the mind. This we can all bear witness to, living as we do plagued by unremitting anxiety in this dreadful epoch of mammoth weapons.

It becomes more and more imperative that the life of the spirit be avowed as the only firm basis upon which to establish happiness and peace.
