Pilot dies in plane crash in southwest Riverside County

The pilot of a twin-engine Piper PA23 was killed Thursday, April 30, when his airplane crashed in a rugged, remote area of southwest Riverside County, authorities said.

The pilot was believed to be the only person aboard, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Riverside County Coroner’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jim Bankston confirmed that the victim died. The victim’s name has not been publicly announced.

A similar plane had been reported overdue at an unspecified location, Gregor said.

Cal Fire said a brush fire broke out at the crash site and burned a quarter-acre. A Cal Fire crew was lowered to the area, where they put out the flames and hiked to the wreckage.

A sheriff’s helicopter was also on the scene.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

According to Sky News, the actor was at the controls when his plane wrongly crossed a runway in Los Angeles on Friday, nearly crashing into another aircraft that was taking off. The incident resulted in an investigation, which isn't the actor's first.

He's been involved in several aviation-related incidents, some resulting in crashes. Three years ago before landing his aircraft on a taxiway in California, he passed over another with 116 passengers on board. After an FAA investigation, the Blade Runner star managed to keep his piloting license.

He was also involved in two crashes over the years – one in 1999 and another in 2015. The latter was an emergency landing on a golf course after he reported engine failure. The crash resulted in a broken pelvis and ankle for the Indiana Jones star.Harrison Ford involved in "near plane crash".

According to CNN, a spokesperson for the 77-year-old released a statement saying on Friday the actor "misheard a radio instruction from ATC" that resulted in the incident.

"He immediately acknowledged the mistake and apologised to ATC for the error," they said.

"The purpose of the flight was to maintain currency and proficiency in the aircraft. No one was injured and there was never any danger of a collision," they added.
