The alternation of dark and light as in ablaq architecture style carries esoteric symbolic meaning.
I believe to those who are "inside" the cults, it expresses their idea that good and evil and intertwined, two sides of the same coin, that positive and negative co-exist and neither one exists without the other. That doing good can be evil and that doing evil can be good.
They tell each other little storIes like this:
When a wolf eats a rabbit, that same act is "good" from the wolf's perspective because that's how he gets nourishment, but "bad" from the rabbit's perspective because it loses its life. If time ran in reverse, the wolf's and rabbit's notion of good and evil would likewise be reversed: the dead rabbit would be brought to life, and the well-fed wolf would become hungry.
The cults think that way.
Black & white floor tiles also express the same idea.
So do the two masonic pillars Joachin and Boaz.
Likewise, sun and moon, day and night, yin-yang symbol, etc.
(Obviously as a Christian believer, I do not hold such views; I'm just relating what the esoteric believers think.)

Unrelated, sort of, but you'd think they'd unabbreviate the brand, at SOME POINT! Still can't find it. https://www.ymca.int/about-us/ymca-history/
