Yes, Jerome, who translated the Hebrew and Greek bibles into Latin, and is responsible for the "vulgate", which Trent calls the approved Latin version. Yes, bright boy. That Jerome.

 

He said the Old Testament apocrypha was not to be regarded as of the same authority as the rest of the Old Testament and was not going to include it in the Vulgate. That was what was being discussed.

 

This fact is problematic for any thinking catholic–the author of the approved Latin version of the Bible did not think that Maccabees, etc. were canonical.

 

If there are any people who know anything about these matters cringing, they must certainly be papists, who have a tendency to cringe when they realize that even the fathers don't agree with them.
