What does it mean to engineer a virus?
Take a nasty wild bat virus (WBV) not infective to humans. Bring it to lab where's you have a lot of other viruses (OV). You have been gene editing OVs for vaccine research supposedly. Running them through herds of ferrets so that they become more infective to humans. Then WBV gets into ferrets because you are sloppy. Now nasty WBV gets to mutate in ferrets and become ingfective to humans. No gene editing, just a non-natural mutation environment. Somebody has to clean ferret cages. They get infected with WBV now causing pandemic. Don't tell anyone.
