High-ranking Indian military staff killed in prolonged hostage rescue operation in Kashmir

An Indian colonel and major were among security personnel killed in a gun battle following a hostage crisis in Handwara, Kashmir. The colonel was the highest-ranking army official to die in an operation of this type in five years.

Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, the commander of the special 21 Rashtriya Rifles counter-terrorism unit, was killed in an hours-long gunfight in the Kupwara District of the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, officials told Indian media.

It is reported that Sharma – the recipient of gallantry awards in the past – was the first Indian commanding officer or a colonel-rank military official to die in a counter-terrorism operation since 2015.

Major Anuj Sood, two army soldiers, and a police officer were also killed in the encounter.

Indian security forces launched an operation on Saturday afternoon to rescue civilians held hostage inside a house. The army units came under a “heavy volume of fire” during the raid, the military said. The siege of the house lasted more than 12 hours, resulting in two militants being killed and all civilians freed.

The Kashmir region has been disputed between India and Pakistan for decades. The situation on the ground remains tense as cross-border shelling and skirmishes between Indian and Pakistani troops often occur along the Line of Control (LoC). The neighboring countries accuse each other of starting the hostilities.

India regularly carries out raids in the region to hunt down armed groups in remote areas, clear their camps, and bust weapons caches.

Iraqi group accuses US of transferring ISIS from Syria to fight them

BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:45 P.M.) – Iraq’s Hezbollah al-Nujaba Movement claims in a new statement that the U.S. is planning to ‘transfer’ senior Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) commanders and other terrorists to Iraq.

“Washington is insisting on the implementation of a plot to return the terrorists to Iraq by transferring a large number of ISIS commanders and militants from the eastern Euphrates and other parts of Syria,” the Movement said via a statement from their official account.

The statement addressed the “U.S. occupiers”, and said, “We stress that the Islamic Resistance of Iraq is monitoring all your destructive plots to prevent the dangers which threaten the Iraqi provinces.”

The statement came after at least ten Iraqi fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi, were killed in an attack by ISIS terrorists in the Salaheddine Governorate this past weekend.

South Korea, North Korea in talks after gunfire exchange in DMZ

South Korean and North Korean troops exchanged gunfire in the demilitarized zone between the nations Sunday morning, and the two sides are now in talks via a military communication line.

North Korea fired at a South Korean military guard post several times around 7:41 a.m. local time, prompting it to shoot back twice and send out a verbal warning, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff. No casualties or damage to equipment were reported in South Korea.

The clash occurred a day after North Korean state media reported leader Kim Jong Un’s first public appearance in almost three weeks. His absence had prompted global speculation about his health. While U.S. officials said they were told Kim was in critical condition after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure, a top South Korean foreign policy adviser later said he was “alive and well.”

The two Koreas had previously exchanged fire within the heavily-fortified DMZ, including in 2014 when Kim was unseen in public for more than a month. Hundreds of thousands of troops on both sides of the border guard the DMZ that bisects the peninsula, a legacy of the 1950-53 war that ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

The media is reporting massive death counts from the China coronavirus. These counts are coming from a couple of sources, one of which is the Worldometer coronavirus website. The death counts on these sites and in the media are over reporting the number of China coronavirus deaths by 62% when compared to the data at the CDC website.
