It's not weird. It's the duck pond for pilots and NFOs. They have certain training routes and certain procedures they practice on those routes. NFOs stay after primary to complete their intermediate training which, for some, includes practicing strike packages. I think that was the training area in AL. So this type of activity is completely normal and part of the training syllabus.
I don't think Mueller augmented, which would mean he was not a career Marine.
