Possibility. Interesting that we've positioned a Mobile Expeditionary Base in the South China Sea and it's apparently operating AH-64's. That was in Boatfag Report from a day ago (or so, hard to keep up by memory when you're half drunk).

USS America is lurking around the area, too. That's a fair-sized chunk of whup ass. Add the Barry (high quality shooter) and Bunker Hill (same and also has upgraded Aegis and SM-3 anti-ballistic missile capability) and that's a real headache for the PLAN. Now put some B-ONEs at Guam and it's downright unpleasant to be a ChiCom in your own front yard, ya know?

5:5 and I'm aware of that. The USS Omaha reported LB was a light blue and Mt Baker was a dark blue. I try to scan 'em all but usually rip through the reds and greens quickly since those are unlikelies.

Scarby Shoal is right at sunrise (Manila is 7:12 am as I'm writing this, so take away an hour). Imma go with my previous assessment - the reason isn't a navigation hazard. Having an MEB there doesn't make sense, handling a nav hazard is for bouy tenders and other coastie boats. And why the AH-64's?

Uncertain that mines are the issue, but it's still a hard one to explain why ships seem to be detouring around that area to the tune of an extra fiddy miles. They aren't avoiding the Paracels or other locations where the ChiComs have set up - they stay out of the warning zone but just sail past.
