His best bet, he decided, was to give himself up to President Richard Nixon in person, and to do that he had to return to the White House. He again picked up the parkway and headed southwest.

At first, the troopers didn’t see any black smoke, large pieces of debris or any of the other evidence they associated with plane crashes.

“Twenty miles out – it was a clear day, you could see 50 miles – we’re looking for black smoke, anything,” Braid, now a state police corporal, said. “We didn’t see anything. Ten miles out, we didn’t see anything. Five miles out, we didn’t see anything.”

“It didn’t make any sense to us,” Paden said.

Finally, as they arrived above the crash site, the troopers began seeing evidence of the impact: a field of scattered paper debris, a small cloud of gray smoke and, finally, a few scorched trees and a crater.

Their helicopter and one other, from a different Aviation Patrol Unit, were the only aircraft in the sky. A few minutes before Flight 93 crashed, reacting to the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the FAA had ordered all air traffic to land.

Paden and Braid had to request a special transponder code from the FAA before they were allowed to take off from Harrisburg.

As Paden flew the helicopter, Braid pulled out his personal video camera, which he normally used to record scenes of crimes and car accidents, and began filming the scene from the air, thinking video footage might prove useful as evidence in some future criminal trial.

Since state police helicopters weren’t outfitted with video equipment in 2001, if Braid hadn’t happened to bring his personal camera along, no aerial footage of the scene so soon after the crash would exist.

In Braid’s video, which he played for the audience, the silhouette of the Boeing 757 is plainly visible in the shape of the crater: the fuselage, which hit the ground nose-down at more than 500 mph, formed the main body of the hole, while three areas of lighter earth – where the wings and the vertical stabilizer impacted – run away from the crater at right angles.
