Indiana governor apologizes after restaurant selfie showed him without a mask and not social distancing
Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb has issued an apology after he was photographed over the weekend, violating social distancing guidelines. Holcomb, 52, was photographed at a local restaurant on Saturday with two women, and none of them were wearing masks, nor were they 6 feet apart, according to the Indianapolis Star. The picture was posted on Facebook but has since been deleted, or the user's account has been made private. In delivering an apology, the GOP governor said he was at the restaurant to pick up an order and left his mask in the car.
“I ordered take out for dinner and ran in to pick it up, leaving my mask in the car," Holcomb said in a statement to 13News. "It was a lapse in my usual vigilance. I should have gone back out to the car to get my mask. My apologies to all the healthcare professionals and Hoosiers who are working so hard to slow the spread. This is … a timely reminder that even a six second snap of a picture requires following the doctors’ recommendation to wear a mask while in public. Lesson learned.”
Indiana has seen more than 20,000 coronavirus cases, which has led to more than 1,150 deaths, according to state data. Holcomb’s apology came the same day Vice President Mike Pence, a former governor of Indiana, conceded that he should have worn a mask during a visit to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota last week.
