Former national security officials say Democrats should oppose Israeli occupation, settlement expansion in platform

More than 30 former national security officials asked the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to use its 2020 platform to push for a fair solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

In a letter obtained by HuffPost, the former officials said the party and its nominee should oppose unilateral Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territory. They said previous platforms have “rightly” committed to Israel’s security but didn’t recognize Palestinian rights.

“Those platforms have, however, also been nearly silent on the rights of Palestinians, on Israeli actions that undermine those rights and the prospects for a two-state solution, and on the need for security for both peoples,” the letter reads

“We ask that the platform … make clear what a comprehensive effort to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should look like under a future Democratic administration, which includes a commitment to security, democracy, and human rights,” it continues.

Those who signed the letter include Avril Haines and Ben Rhodes, both top officials under former President Obama, along with advisers to a number of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s opponents in the 2020 primary. Former diplomats who have worked on the conflict, including Martin Indyk and Strobe Talbott, also added their names in support.

WHO says US hasn't shared any evidence linking coronavirus to Chinese lab

The U.S. government has not provided the World Health Organization (WHO) with any data or information linking the coronavirus to a laboratory in China, senior WHO officials said Monday, just days after President Trump claimed to have seen such evidence.

Trump told reporters on Thursday that he had seen evidence that made him confident the virus was tied to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. He refused to offer any details.

"I can't tell you that. I am not allowed to tell you that," Trump said.

At a press briefing Monday, WHO officials said evidence based on nearly 15,000 fully sequenced samples of the coronavirus suggested it is of natural origin, and that they had seen no evidence that a laboratory was involved.

"We have not received any data or specific evidence from the United States government relating to the purported origin," said Mike Ryan, director of the WHO's emergency program. "From our perspective, this remains speculative."

"If that data and evidence is available, it will be for the United States government to decide when it can be shared," Ryan added.

Why the hell would US officials share evidence with WHO knowing they will give data to the CCP so they can scrub it?

Poll: Two-thirds support vote-by-mail as alternative to in-person voting during pandemic

Nearly two-thirds of Americans say they would support voting by mail as an alternative to in-person voting on Election Day if the coronavirus continues to pose a public health threat in November, according to a poll released Monday.

The USA Today-Suffolk University poll found that 65 percent of respondents endorsed mail-in voting as an alternative, while just 32 percent said they oppose it. Three percent said they were undecided.

Opinions broke primarily along partisan lines, with Republicans being far more wary of voting by mail. Forty-three percent of GOP respondents said they supported vote-by-mail as an alternative during the pandemic, while 53 percent opposed it. Among Democrats, 84 percent said they supported it, with 14 percent against it.

Sixty-six percent of independents said they supported vote-by-mail.

The survey results come amid a heated debate over mail-in voting, with proponents voicing concerns about having large gatherings at polling stations during the pandemic. Some Democratic lawmakers are now calling for states to expand mail-in voting ahead of November.

President Trump, meanwhile, has come out against mail-in voting, arguing it has “tremendous potential for fraud” and gives Democrats an advantage.

Five states — Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah and Washington — already hold elections almost entirely by mail. Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia give voters the option. Voting by mail is only available in certain circumstances in the other 16 states.

Recent polls show that mail-in voting is gaining traction among Americans.
