Actually the swirl comes from Naruto's last name, Uzumaki which is the Japanese word for spiral. Hence you will see him with the motif throughout the series such as the cut pieces of uzumaki crab in his ramen or even his signature Rasengen attack.
However there is a series of books, shows, and movies from Junji Ito called Uzumaki which will make you fear spirals for several months.
