LONG ISLAND, NY — The much-heralded "army" of contact tracers has begun to be assembled: New York State is now hiring "community support specialists" who will remotely work to trace confirmed coronavirus cases as the state begins its reopening.
On Thursday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo estimated the state will hire up to 17,000 contact tracers, depending on case projections. The tracers will help identify the contacts of those who test positive and then facilitate their quarantine to lessen the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
The job listing has a range of requirements including experience in social services, a degree or three years of coursework in social science, New York State residency and knowledge and a familiarity with the health care system. Second language fluency is a bonus, as are the following ideal skills:
Ability to exhibit a professional, positive attitude and independent work ethic.
Excellent interpersonal skills required and ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse individuals during a time of crisis and distress.
Ability to show empathy to distressed individuals and assist with identifying solutions to problems identified.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Critical thinking and sound judgment required.
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
Proficiency with computers including data entry into electronic tracking systems and running summary reports.
According to ABC News, more than 4,000 New Yorkers have already applied for the positions, which pay $57,000 a year. The number of tracers will be proportional to the region, with 1,000 needed for New York City alone.
