In the fictional series "Dollhouse", The Attic is a term that refers to a place where people who are threats to the system are sent, as well as the mental condition they are forced to exist in. The location looks like an intensive care ward, with the "patients" suspended in gelatinous liquid inside coffin-like glass tubs, unable to move or to wake up from a suspended animation state. They are hooked up to machines for breathing and monitoring, and their brains are connected to computers. Experientially, the attic is like living in a recurring nightmare.
A powerful corportation connects the minds of attic "inmates" into a massively parallel computer system, which they use to process their world leading research, and their dark projects. The nightmares are not merely intended to torture inmates, but to keep their adrenaline levels high. The human brain is many times more powerful than any supercomputer, and those trapped in the Attic are kept in a permanent adrenaline-infused state to maximize brain processing throughput.
One character who sends people to The Attic describes it as the sensation of being unable to remember something that's on the tip of your tongue. In this case, what one is unable to remember is their entire life. The Attic dwellers retain more sense of identity than do the Dolls, who have been completely mind-wiped, but not by much.
One character attempts suicide to try to escape his sentence of being put into the attic, presumably deeming it a fate worse than death.
