Think mirror.

The media is the mirror that they project their illusion on, and when someone looks in that mirror, they see a distorted and corrupted view of themselves. They think that what they see is real, but it's not. It's how they create their illusion and when enough people believe the illusion, it becomes reality and self sustaining.
