Agree on the multiple releases theory. In Europe, deaths in each nation began and ramped up within the first week of March and US close behind (other nations on a second chart).

 

Typically, statistical data is reported in a per capita basis for a reasonable comparison. Except with covid-19 they only report the total deaths. If they reported per capita, it would show the US has been about #10 behind nations with a socialized healthcare system.
