Democrat Illinois Governor Pritzker Says Christian Churches May Not Reopen for a Year

Illinois Democrat Governor J.B. Pritzker told reporters on Wednesday churches in his state may not reopen for a year.

Pritzker must believe the First Amendment is optional.

As Cassandra Fairbanks previously reported an Illinois church filed a lawsuit against Democrat Governor J.B. Pritzker in April for violating the First Amendment and the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

The lawsuit, filed by the Thomas More Society on behalf of The Beloved Church in Lena, claims that the governor has a “hostility” towards religious faith.

Pastor Steve Cassell is seeking a temporary restraining order to stop him from being arrested if he holds a service at the beginning of May.

We now know that top US physicians based their COVID-19 plan based on garbage models from the UK.

The Washington Examiner reported:

It could be more than a year before churches are allowed to resume their in-person gatherings, according to Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

Pritzker announced a five-phase plan to reopen Illinois that gives guidance to schools, businesses, churches, and other religious centers about when they will be allowed to reopen. In phase three, gatherings of up to 10 people will be allowed. In phase four, gatherings of up to 50 people will be allowed. Gatherings of more than 50 people will not be allowed until phase five.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Pritzker confirmed that churches will be held to the same standards and not be allowed to hold in-person services of more than 50 people until phase five, even if it takes more than a year to get to that position.

“You know, that in phase three, there can be gatherings, church gatherings, of 10 or fewer. In phase four, 50 or fewer. So that’s the guidance that’s been given to me,” Pritzker said. “I’m not the one providing that guidance. It really is what the scientists and epidemiologists are recommending.”

The Romanians who fled communism say they will open their churches.

Sticky situation: S. African virtual parliament session Zoom-bombed with PORN

South Africa’s National Assembly was unceremoniously ‘Zoom-bombed’ on Thursday morning, when a hacker inundated lawmakers’ screens with porn. The miscreant also racially abused the assembly’s speaker Thandi Modise.

The politicians were just 50 seconds into the first item on the agenda, shortly after 9am on Thursday morning, when DA chief whip Natasha Mazzone was cut off mid-sentence while discussing how future virtual meetings of parliament would be conducted.

“This is exactly what I said about Zoom!” exclaimed shocked speaker Modise, in reference to a previous South African virtual parliamentary session which was hacked on the same platform.

More pornographic images and videos flashed across the screens as lawmakers scrambled to avert their gaze in apparent shock and disgust. The meeting lasted a reported 4.5 minutes before the decision was made to cut proceedings short. As the farce unfolded, a man’s voice could be heard making racist and sexually offensive remarks at Modise.

The meeting was reconvened later in the day as South Africa remains under strict lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Zoom has been widely criticized for its apparent lack of security, which led to the prevalence of this ‘Zoom-bombing’ trend, in which uninvited guests troll random Zoom calls.

A virtual meeting held by the election commission of the US state of Indiana in April was also Zoom-bombed with sexually explicit content, this time by a masturbating hacker.

Mexican chemical plant RIPPED APART by huge blast as locals flee for their lives

At least seven units of the local fire department have been deployed to the scene, following a massive explosion at a chemical plant in Garcia, in the state of Nuevo Leon, in northeastern Mexico.

The chemical recycling plant processes solvents and various oils in an industrial sector of the city. Despite the enormous explosion, somewhat miraculously, there have as yet been no confirmed injuries. Eyewitness video from the scene shows the sheer scale of the blaze and the resultant thick black smoke that is now blanketing parts of the metropolitan area.

Teams from both the city’s fire services and the local civil protection division have been deployed to combat the fire, which is spewing a plume of smoke hundreds of feet into the air.

Multiple secondary explosions have been reported, frustrating firefighting efforts at the plant, since the initial blast at approximately 9pm local time.

No evacuation orders have yet been issued, although the public have been urged to avoid the area, and a security cordon has been established amid concerns of secondary blasts. Nonetheless, residents of the Bicentenario neighborhood have left their homes en masse in fear of the potential release of toxic gas. Although the fire has leapt to an adjacent vacant lot, it is not expected to spread any further.

USPS has lost $78 billion since 2007 despite receiving billions from taxpayers every year. Democrats still want a bailout.

That doesn't make sense

A new government report shows the severity of the United States Postal Service's poor financial conditions and demonstrates the need for a long-term fix for the agency — not a bailout, as Democrats have suggested.

The report, released Thursday by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, found that the Postal Service's financial problems existed long before the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted the need for Congress to step in and institute major reforms.

The key data point: Between fiscal years 2007 and 2019, the Postal Service netted losses of approximately $78 billion — and that's despite receiving roughly $18 billion each year from American taxpayers.

GAO said that the agency has been on its "High Risk" list since 2009 but that financial viability has only worsened since then "due to declining mail volume, increased employee compensation and benefit costs, and increased unfunded liabilities and debt."

What lawmakers are saying

"This report reiterates what many of us have known for a long time: The Postal Service's business model is failing and simply throwing more of taxpayer's hard-earned money at them won't fix their problems," House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said in a statement.

"If Congress is going to be asked to get the Postal Service out of yet another fiscal jam, we owe it to the American people to make sure we aren't just setting them up for yet another bailout the next time there's an emergency," he continued, citing reform initiatives.

"While Democrats continue to push for a complete bailout of the Postal Service in COVID-19-related legislation, the report released today makes clear that the systemic issues within the Postal Service far pre-date this pandemic," Oversight Committee member Fred Keller (R-Pa.) said.

Earlier this year, during coronavirus stimulus negotiations, the USPS requested a whopping $75 billion bailout from taxpayers citing the economic fallout caused by the virus. Democrats lobbied to get the money into the CARES Act, but Republicans and President Donald Trump pushed back. In the end, the USPS was provided with a $10 billion loan.

In response, House Democrats have continued to push for more funding.

"The Postal Service was technically insolvent to begin with, but the pandemic has completely changed the environment here … the mail volume drop has been catastrophic," said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who chairs the oversight subcommittee that oversees USPS.

The report recommends an overhaul

The GAO report concluded that "comprehensive, effective, and successful reform" cannot occur until there is clarity around what services the USPS should provide, whether the agency should be financially self-sustaining, and what institutional structure would support these changes.

The office then submitted three recommendations to congressional consideration:

Congress should consider reassessing and determining the level of universal postal service the nation requires. (Matter for Consideration 1)

Congress should consider determining the extent to which USPS should be financially self-sustaining and what changes to law would be appropriate to enable USPS to meet this goal. (Matter for Consideration 2)

Congress should consider determining the most appropriate institutional structure for USPS. (Matter for Consideration 3)

"Absent congressional action on critical foundational elements of the USPS business model, USPS's mission and financial solvency are increasingly in peril," the report concluded.

Stigma or precaution? DoD memo lists Covid-19 as ‘permanently disqualifying’ for survivors seeking to join army

New guidelines for US military recruiters severely limit the chances for survivors of the coronavirus to join the ranks of the armed forces, banning them from service outright unless they obtain a special waiver.

A memo penned by the US Military Entrance Processing Command (MEPCOM) laying out guidelines for staffers who screen applicants for military service has been circulated online. The authenticity of the document – which effectively makes the coronavirus a black mark, excluding survivors from the pool of potential recruits – was confirmed by Pentagon spokeswoman Jessica Maxwell on Wednesday, as cited by the Military Times.

All recruits at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) will be required to go through a thorough screening process aimed at determining whether they have ever contracted Covid-19, even if they have never tested positive for the disease.

The typical screening procedure would entail MEPS staff taking recruits’ temperatures and asking questions about whether they have ever displayed symptoms consistent with the deadly virus or could have been exposed to the disease. If recruits who had not been formally diagnosed with Covid-19 fail the screening, they will be permitted another attempt at the station after 14 days, provided they remain symptom-free.

However, if an aspiring member of the military has a known history of the virus, confirmed either through a lab test or by a doctor, he will be “authorized to process 28 days after the documented date of diagnosis.” After that period, there is a very slim chance he would be accepted, however, as a history with the illness will be deemed “permanently disqualifying” for service, according to the memo.

The only loophole left for applicants is to obtain a waiver that can be granted for all medical conditions – but they are not easy to get. The likelihood of that happening is even more miniscule given that there is currently no policy regulating when such exemptions can be granted in the context of Covid-19.

Veteran Cop Arrested for Trafficking Massive Amount of Weed and Cocaine

Redding, CA — As TFTP regularly reports, all too often cops are caught hypocritically breaking the laws they are tasked with enforcing. Their role as a law enforcement officer gives them access to inside information, subsequently giving the ability to do things that regular criminals cannot. Much of the time, the corruption goes under the radar and cops get to retire having lived a double life. A cop in Redding, California, however, is no longer living that double life.

The other two were identified as Redding residents Heather Legault, 40, and Michael Gray, 39, according to a CHP press release. According to police, they recovered over 138 pounds of processed marijuana, 332 marijuana plants, 30 grams of cocaine, two firearms and $59,000 in U.S. currency.

CHP Northern Division Chief Elizabeth Barkley explained to reporters that the investigation started when a citizen informed authorities of possible criminal activity inside the warehouse. When police obtained a search warrant for the warehouse, they found the contraband.

Barkley refused to elaborate on Williams’ connection to to the alleged drug ring or how police knew he was involved. When questioned about Williams receiving potential blue privilege, Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett said, “When we do receive the case, it will be treated as all other cases, as the law applies equally to everyone.”

According to the Record Searchlight, Redding Police Chief Bill Schueller said Williams has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation by RPD’s professional standards unit. After the arrest Schueller released the following statement, noting how one of his officers getting arrested for drugs “disturbed” him.

“I am deeply disturbed by the arrest of Corporal Will Williams for the cultivation of marijuana and the possession of marijuana for sale. So much so, that after learning of his arrest, I requested the assistance from our Federal Law Enforcement partners with this investigation. This kind of criminal behavior, especially by a law enforcement officer sworn to uphold the law, cannot, and will not, be tolerated.

As required under the law, Corporal Williams has been placed on paid Administrative Leave, pending the outcome of an internal investigation by my Professional Standards Unit. At the conclusion of this investigation I will determine any discipline, up to, and including, termination. I will be as transparent with that decision, as the law allows.

I understand this kind of behavior can erode the community’s trust and confidence in their police department. I can assure you, we hold our officers to the highest moral, and ethical, standards. This type of criminal behavior, is not a reflection of the rest of our incredibly hard working men and women at the Redding Police Department and the work they perform each and every day.”

Salvini slams Italian government’s plan to grant amnesty to 600,000 illegal migrants

Senator Matteo Salvini, the leader of the populist League party in Italy, has slammed Italy’s leftist-establishment government’s plans to grant amnesty to some 600,000 illegal migrants.

According to a report from the Milan-based newspaper Il Giornale, the plan – put forward by Italian Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova – would allow the government to issue six-month, renewable residency and work permit to the 600,000 illegal migrants

Responding to the plan, Salvini took to Twitter, writing: “The government has announced an amnesty for illegal migrants at a time when the number of arrivals has increased by 350 percent. 136 people made landfall on Lampedusa only this evening. Italy as a migrant camp? No, thanks.”

Aside from the 181 migrants that were allowed to disembark from the cruise ship ‘Raffaele Rubattino’ on Monday in Palermo, 200 more migrants arrived on the island of Lampedusa this week. According to a report from La Repubblica, the newest group of 200 migrants joins another group of 100 or so migrants that have been living on the Favaloro pier for the past two days. A few kilometers off the coast of Lampedusa another 118 migrants are in quarantine.

Lampedusa Mayor Salvatore Martello has called on Italy’s defense and interior ministers, as well as the President of the Region, to take immediate action to remedy the situation.

“The landings continue, and in this case, moreover, there is a dangerous rejection of responsibility: in fact, no military means so far is willing to accompany the migrants from the dock to the Favaloro pier from where they must be transferred from since the hotspot is already full and cannot accommodate other migrants for the necessary medical quarantine.”

“As mayor I have no direct intervention power. What should we do? I asked to tow the boat to the pier but it is not possible to go on like this. We are in full coronavirus emergency, the citizens of the island have the right to have their health protected and I also understand that the same needs apply to the men of law enforcement. But this situation is unacceptable. The institutions that have a duty to intervene they cannot unload the weight of the reception entirely on our shoulders.”

‘When clowns purchase gowns’: UK govt skewered after ALL 400,000 items of PPE bought from Turkey fail inspection

A highly-publicized shipment of urgently-needed personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers fighting Covid-19 has backfired spectacularly for Downing Street, after the items were deemed unfit for use.

British ministers used the arrival of 400,000 protective gowns flown in from Turkey last month as evidence of the government’s pro-active approach to overcoming the health crisis. Some two weeks later, the British public has learned that the PPE shipment has been impounded after being deemed unsuitable by UK standards. Unsurprisingly, people are fuming.

Speaking to Sky News about the scandal, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham – a member of the Labour opposition – offered an almost charitable analysis of the gaffe.

“It doesn’t look good does it? It was a decision driven by desperation,” the mayor noted, adding that the Tory government has handled the PPE situation in the country “poorly.”

A more scathing comment tried to imagine the telephone conversation that took place among ministers after they learned that the medical garments had no practical use.

Many of the furious reactions to the story took a blunt, direct tone.

“When clowns purchase gowns,” observed one unimpressed Twitter user.

The government has tried to argue that there is a silver lining to the embarrassing blunder. Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis told the BBC that it was “reassuring” that British experts were “ensuring the best quality of equipment.”

The good news is that British taxpayers (might) get their money back. According to media reports, the Department for Health and Social Care is planning to ship the PPE back to Turkey and will seek a full refund.

Yale Scientist: Reopening America Is ‘Awfully Close to Genocide’

A Yale University scientist argued in a social media post published on Wednesday that the United States government’s plan to reopen American after the Chinese virus pandemic amounts to “genocide” of “African-Americans, Latinos, other people of color.”

Yale epidemiologist Gregg Gonsalves criticized the U.S. government’s response to the Chinese virus pandemic and its plan to reopen the country in a tweet that was published on Wednesday, suggesting that it would be “genocide by default” to lift “shelter in place” restrictions. Gonsalves also suggested that the government’s response would disproportionately impact “people of color.”

“How many people will die this summer, before Election Day? What proportion of the deaths will be among African-Americans, Latinos, other people of color?” Gonsalves wrote in the tweet. “This is getting awfully close to genocide by default. What else do you call mass death by public policy?”

In another tweet, Gonsalves argued that government officials should face consequences for their response to the pandemic under international law. “So, what does it mean to let thousands die by negligence, omission, failure to act, in a legal sense under international law?” Gonsalves wrote in a follow-up tweet.

Gonsalves tweet was highlighted this week in a report by China’s state-run communist publication, the People’s Daily. “An epidemiologist at Yale University on Wednesday launched one of the harshest attacks on the U.S. administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, saying it was ‘close to genocide by default,'” the report read.

In a tweet on Thursday morning, Gonsalves said he was receiving criticism from the “right-wing mob-machine” for his comments on the Trump administration’s response to the pandemic.

“The right-wing mob-machine is upset with me. Getting threatening emails again,” Gonsalves said. “Guess I should get with the program and say what a wonderful job the White House is doing on #COVID19, #coronavirus. Nope. Not a chance.”

China: If We Have to Pay for Coronavirus, U.S. Has to Pay for AIDS, 2008 Financial Crisis

Chinese state media once again floated the prospect of international lawsuits against the United States for supposedly being responsible for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in a column Thursday, adding the 2008 financial crisis and the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic to the list.

The Global Times and People’s Daily, two of the most prominent Chinese Communist Party English-language mouthpieces, have repeatedly responded to lawsuits against Beijing for actions it took that exacerbated the Chinese coronavirus pandemic with threats of similar lawsuits against the United States. Two American states, Missouri and Mississippi, have filed lawsuits against the Chinese Communist Party in U.S. court for its attempts to hide the outbreak when it began in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

In the early days of the outbreak in January, Chinese officials arrested doctors and others sharing information on containing infectious diseases, claimed the virus was not transmissible from human to human, and pressured other countries not to limit travel across their borders from China, directly contributing to the severity of the pandemic.

Calling global outrage over the Communist Party’s behavior “bald-faced political blackmail,” the Global Times asserted that “China is never the one to be blamed” over any global woes related to the Chinese coronavirus. Instead, it identified the “arrogance of some American politicians” as the true source of humanity’s misfortune. Noting that several American states have sued the Communist Party for its role in the pandemic, the column – signed by Zhong Sheng, a pseudonym for the staff of the People’s Daily – warned that the collapse of sovereign immunity that such lawsuits would represent could result in a tidal wave of litigation against America:

Under the logic of some American politicians, the U.S. is the one to be held accountable and it should compensate the international society, for the Spanish Flu, AIDS and other epidemics, the 2008 international financial crisis which led to the collapse of countless enterprises and individuals, and the wars launched against other countries the over the years which have caused millions of innocent civilian casualties and numerous property losses.

Sovereign immunity is an international law policy that largely exempts states from litigation in domestic court systems. States can sue each other in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – where individual persons cannot lodge complains – to prevent state actors from avoiding justice. There are exemptions to sovereign immunity, however. Most recently, the U.S. Congress passed a law in 2016 allowing American individuals to sue the government of Saudi Arabia in court for damages related to the jihadist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Lawmakers in Congress, led by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), are reportedly working on similar legislation to allow lawsuits against China.

“There is overwhelming evidence that the Chinese Communist Party’s lies, deceit, and incompetence caused COVID-19 to transform from a local disease outbreak into a global pandemic,” Hawley said in a statement announcing his Justice for Victims of COVID-19 Act, which would carve out a sovereign immunity exception for China. “We need an international investigation to learn the full extent of the damage the CCP has inflicted on the world and then we need to empower Americans and other victims around the world to recover damages. The CCP unleashed this pandemic. They must be held accountable to their victims.”

While the bill moves through Congress, prosecutors in Missouri are suing the Communist Party itself and arguing that it is a separate entity from the state of the People’s Republic of China.

Ex-PM Theresa May Blames Nationalism for Coronavirus Crisis, Praises China Backing WHO Instead

The former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Theresa May blamed the forces of nationalism and populism for the scale of the Chinese coronavirus crisis, saying that countries should instead coalesce around “great multilateral institutions” such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

In an article entitled “Nationalism Is No Ally in This Battle Without Borders” — the ex-prime minister who failed to deliver Brexit said that the pandemic hit the world at a time in which a “US president was elected on a mandate of America First”.

“Against a backdrop of populist politics in many countries, the search for political solutions to economic and social challenges has become a competition of absolutes. A polarised politics has taken hold. It views the world through a prism of winners and losers and sees compromise and co-operation as signs of weakness,” the ex-prime minister wrote in The Times.

“Lost is the idea that countries do better by working together to solve common problems, even if doing so sometimes means an apparent sacrifice of short-term benefit for the greater good,” she added.

Mrs May chose instead to hail the “great multilateral institutions” of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), despite the fact that the WHO promoted Chinese communist propaganda from the outset of the coronavirus outbreak.

“There remains no collective international view as to what works best in dealing with the virus — nor does there seem to have been any attempt to form one. This risks exacerbating the shift towards nationalism and absolutism which is emasculating the institutions that served us well over decades,” May lamented.

Suicide Rise from Lockdowns to Kill More than Coronavirus in Australia

The rise in the suicide rate caused by lockdowns in Australia is predicted to exceed deaths from the Wuhan coronavirus by a factor of ten, the Australian reported Thursday.

Researchers from Sydney University’s Brain and Mind Centre forecast a 50 percent rise in the national suicide rate because of the economic and social impact of government responses to the virus, which would drive deaths to as much as ten times higher than those causes by the coronavirus itself.

Already this year global deaths by suicide are significantly higher than those attributed to the coronavirus. According to the respected Worldometers running tallies, there have already been 374,225 suicides since the start of 2020, whereas the Wuhan coronavirus has claimed 251,898 lives, Johns Hopkins University reveals.

If the Australian research holds up for other nations as well, the global suicide rate could end up far outpacing the death toll from COVID-19.

The uptick in Australian suicides will be felt over a number of years, the Australian scholars suggest, and the coronavirus response could produce “a generational mental health crisis” resulting in an extra 1500 deaths each year over the next five years.

The university forecast has received backing from the Australian Medical Association, and Health Minister Greg Hunt is expected to present the results at the national cabinet next week.

Along with the sharp rise in suicides, the research also foresees substantial economic fallout from reduced productivity from the mental health effects of unemployment, school dropouts, and family crises.

According to Ian Hickie, Australia’s former mental health commissioner and the head of the Brain and Mind Centre, the annual rate of suicide could rise from 3000 to up to 4500, with youth suicides making up nearly half that figure.

“We are facing a situation where between an extra 750 and 1500 suicides may occur annually, this in addition to the 3000-plus lives that are lost to suicide already every year,” Professor Hickie said.

Deaths from mental health issues are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the long-term health impacts from the lockdowns, however, leading some observers to propose that “locking down whole populations in the hope of ‘flattening the curve’ was a catastrophic error, perhaps the worst policy mistake ever committed by Western governments during peacetime.”

For instance, national lockdowns have forced countries across the globe to close down TB treatment programs, which reportedly could lead to 6.3 million additional cases of TB and 1.4 million deaths over the next five years.

48 Pounds of Liquid Meth Seized at Immigration Checkpoint 80 Miles from Border

Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents seized nearly 50 pounds of liquid methamphetamine at an inland immigration checkpoint located about 80 miles north of the border. In addition, agents patrolling near Brownsville, Texas, found four smuggling “mules” carrying more than 65 pounds of marijuana.

Falfurrias Station Border Patrol agents assigned to the immigration checkpoint located on U.S. Highway 281 about 80 miles north of the Mexican border with Texas observed a Hyundai sedan approaching for inspection. During an initial interview and inspection, a K-9 agent alerted to an odor it is trained to detect, according to information provided by Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol officials.

The agents referred the driver to a secondary inspection station where they conducted a search of the vehicle. During the search, the agents found 48 pounds of liquid methamphetamine. Officials estimated the value of the liquid meth to be approximately $1.5 million.

Earlier that morning, agents patrolling the Rio Grande near Brownsville encountered several people carrying backpacks. The agents seized three bundles of marijuana and arrested four smugglers, officials stated. The agents estimated the value of the marijuana to be approximately $52,000.

The Falfurrias Immigration Checkpoint is frequently the scene of drug and human smuggling interactions, Breitbart Texas reported. The newly rebuilt station increased its capacity to screen vehicles and carry out additional secondary inspections.

The ranchlands surrounding the Falfurrias Checkpoint are also frequently the scene of migrant deaths as callous human smugglers abandon migrants as they attempt to circumvent the checkpoint.

“Human smugglers have no regard for the lives of the people they smuggle into this country,” Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez told Breitbart Texas in a phone interview earlier this year. “If someone gets injured or they get dehydrated, overheated, suffer hypothermia in the winter, or for any other reason cannot keep up, the cartel-connected human smugglers simply abandon them and leave them to die.”

So far this year, Border Patrol agents and Brooks County Sheriff’s Office deputies recovered the remains of 16 deceased migrants on the ranches surrounding the Falfurrias checkpoint, sheriff’s office officials told Breitbart Texas.

Researchers Use Computer Chip In Patient’s Brain To Restore Sense Of Touch After Spinal Cord Injury

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A scientific breakthrough has given a man in Ohio the chance to reclaim a major part of his life after a devastating injury.

Ian Burkhart suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2010 while on vacation from Ohio University. He dove into a wave and struck an unseen sandbar that paralyzed him instantly. Since 2014, researchers at the nonprofit, Battelle, and the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center have been working on new technologies to help restore the use of Burkhart’s right arm.

In a new report, published in the journal Cell, the researchers have succeeded in connecting neural signals between Burkhart’s brain and arm. The breakthrough system is able to harness signals that are usually too small to perceive, enhances them, and sends them to the patient.

“We’re taking subperceptual touch events and boosting them into conscious perception,” Battelle research scientist Patrick Ganzer said in a statement. “It was a big eureka moment when we first restored the participant’s sense of touch.”

Using Technology To Talk To The Brain

The brain-computer interface (BCI) system implants a small computer chip in the brain and places a series of electrodes on the patient’s skin. After the connection is made to Burkhart’s arm, wires route the movement signals from his brain straight to the muscles — avoiding the damage caused by the 28-year-old’s spinal injury.

Thanks to the BCI, researchers say Burkhart has enough control over his arm now to lift a cup, swipe a credit card, or even play video games like Guitar Hero. Ganzer says that patients who have suffered a “clinically complete” spinal cord injury still have a few remnants of nerve fiber that survive the injury. The BCI helps the body boost the signals from those remaining fibers and gets the to brain respond to them.

The Ohio researchers add that their system works very much like how a cell phone or video game controller lets the user know something is going on. Using “haptic feedback,” a vibration or other force a machine produces to get a user’s attention, the BCI helps the touch signals coming from the patient’s skin to reach the brain as understandable haptic feedback.

Rosenstein memo tasked Mueller to investigate already-discredited Steele allegations

Allegations in Rod Rosenstein's August 2017 scoping memo about Carter Page had already been traced to Russia intelligence misinformation campaign.

hen-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein instructed Special Counsel Robert Mueller in August 2017 to investigate allegations against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page that originated with the Steele dossier and had already been discredited by the FBI, a newly declassified memo showed Wednesday night.

The Justice Department's release of the unredacted version of Rosenstein's so-called investigative scoping memo provided the first declarative evidence that Mueller was asked to investigate widely suspect allegations from Christopher Steele's opposition research conducted for the Clinton campaign and Democratic Party back in 2016.

Specifically, Rosenstein's memo instucted Mueller to investigate "allegations that Carter Page committed a crime or crimes by colluding with Russian government officials with respect to the Russian government's efforts to interfere with the 2016 election for President of the United States, in violation of United States law." Recently declassified evidence has shown that by the time that instruction was given, the FBI had:

fired Steele as an informant for leaking;

interviewed Steele's sub-source, who disputed information attributed to him;

ascertained that allegations Steele had given the FBI specifically about Page were inaccurate and likely came from Russian intelligence sources as disinformation;

been informed repeatedly by the CIA that Page was not a Russian stooge but, rather, a cooperating intelligence asset for the United States government.

Former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, who long called for the release of the unredacted scoping memo, said Wednesday's development confirmed his worst suspicions. He accused prior officials of the Justice Department of unnecessarily hiding the evidence from Congress and the American people before Attorney General William Barr intervened.

“This information was redacted until now for one single reason — to hide the fact that false allegations from the Steele dossier were included in Mueller’s scoping memo," Nunes told Just the News. "In other words, a bunch of lies paid for by the Democrats were used to engineer the appointment of a Special Counsel to drag the Trump administration through the mud for years. The Russia collusion hoax was a disgrace, and we can’t let anything like it ever be repeated.”

The degree to which the FBI had discredited Steele's intelligence reporting on Page — including allegations he colluded with Russia — only came into focus with the December, 2019 release of DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz's report on FBI abuses of the FISA surveillance that targeted Page. In addition, just-declassified evidence showed the FBI had learned by February 2017 that Steele's information on Page was likely disinformation from Russian intelligence planted with Steele.
