Schumer, Pelosi set to unveil 'Rooseveltian' relief package
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Thursday that he and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will soon unveil a coronavirus relief package that he described as “Rooseveltian” in its scope and size.
“We need big, bold action," Schumer said in an MSNBC interview with Stephanie Ruhle, adding that he and Pelosi "are working very closely together on putting together a very strong plan, which you will hear shortly.”
“We need Franklin Rooseveltian-type action and we hope to take that in the House and Senate in a very big and bold way,” he added.
Schumer's remarks came in response to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) statement earlier this week that Congress needs to "take a pause” before passing more pandemic relief legislation.
Congress has passed nearly $3 trillion in aid over the past two months.
Schumer on Thursday said the fiscally cautious approach now being taken by Republicans like McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) reminded him of former President Hoover’s response to the 1929 stock market crash and the onset of the Great Depression.
“The people like McConnell and McCarthy and even [President] Trump who say, ‘Let’s wait and do nothing,’ well, they remind me of the old Herbert Hoovers. We had the Great Depression — Hoover said let’s just wait it out. It got worse and worse,” Schumer said.
Hoover famously, and wrongly, predicted a rapid economic recovery in 1930. Instead, the Great Depression lasted until 1939.
Schumer said the better course of action is to follow in the footsteps of former President Franklin Roosevelt, who oversaw the largest expansion of the federal government and is credited by many historians with helping to end the Great Depression.
Schumer noted that Congress has appropriated nearly $500 billion to set up a Treasury Department-Federal Reserve credit-lending facility with more than $4 trillion in firepower so that financial markets would not crash.
“We've got to have the same focus, even a stronger focus on the people — the working people, the average people who are suffering as well. We need the same kind of big, bold, tough action,” he said. “We need action here to help average folks. We’ve done some in the House and Senate, we need to do a lot more.”
The $2.2 trillion CARES Act signed into law March 27 substantially beefed up unemployment benefits by adding a $600-a-week federal bonus to workers' state unemployment benefits, in some states boosting jobless benefits above the average hourly wage.

Greece’s Renewed Relations with Syria Further Isolates Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean
On Tuesday, the Greek Foreign Ministry finally announced a restoration of relations between Greece and Syria and assigned former ambassador to Syria and Russia, Tasia Athanassiou, as a Special Envoy of Greece’s Foreign Ministry for Syria. Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias confirmed this from his Twitter. The appointment of Athanassiou is extremely strategic as she was Greece’s ambassador to Damascus from 2009 to 2012, meaning she is already familiar with Syria and their authorities.
The Greek Foreign Ministry said that contacts will be made for the “international aspects of Syria and related humanitarian action, as well as coordination of actions in view of the ongoing efforts to rebuild Syria.”
Although the Foreign Ministry claims that the suspension of diplomatic relations “was dictated by the security conditions,” we know it was ordered by former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in December 2012 under orders from NATO and the European Union who were, and in some instances, still backing jihadists against the secular government of President Bashar al-Assad.
Greece became a country ruled by European banker, EU, and NATO puppets from 2010 onwards when on May 2 of that year, the so-called socialist government of George Papandreou signed the first of three bailout packages with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF. This caused a 25% contraction of the Greek economy, an unemployment rate of 27% and skyrocketed poverty. Any semblance of Greek independence in domestic and foreign policy was lost.
However, moving to 2020, the economic and geopolitical situation in Greece and its surrounding region has drastically changed. Diplomatic sources quoted by Kathemirini, one of Greece’s oldest and most respected newspaper, said that the decision to appoint a Special Envoy for Syria is part of Greece’s steady activity in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider region. According to the sources, Greece’s increased desire in contributing to efforts in resolving the Syrian crisis was stated by Dendias in his meetings with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Otto Pedersen.
Therefore, a major reason for the reopening of relations with Syria is to further tilt the balance of power in the East Mediterranean in Greece’s favor against Turkey, especially at a time when Ankara does not have a single ally in the region, with the exception of the besieged Muslim Brotherhood government in Libya that is nearly collapsed because of the Libyan National Army’s assault.

Tit For Tat: Turkey, Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham Reached Initial Agreement On Greater Idlib
Turkey and al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have reached an initial agreement on Greater Idlib, the Shaam Network reported on May 5.
The agreement was reached during a meeting held after the April 26 clashes on the Lattakia-Aleppo highway, known as the M4. Back then, HTS and other groups targeted Turkish forces that were trying to secure the highway. This attack provoked a limited Turkish military response.
Sources with the knowledge on the matter told the Shaam Network that the meeting was attended by Turkish officers and senior HTS commanders, including Abu Hassan 600 and Abu Hussein al-Urduni. The meeting was held in a camp of Turkish forces near the town of Arihah in southern Idlib.
“The leadership of Turkish forces in Idlib considered the practices of HTS to be provocative … HTS was negotiating through intermediaries to secure commercial gains on the road [the M4] … As well as on frontlines with the regime, taking advantage of the protest,” the pro-opposition outlet quoted its sources as saying.
As a result of the meeting, HTS agreed to end the sit-in on the M4 highway in exchange for Turkey allowing it to open a crossing with government-held areas in western Aleppo.
The crossing was opened soon after near the town of Maaret Elnaasan. However, clashes with locals who rejected the step forced HTS to suspend work at the crossing for the time being.
HTS’ deal with Turkey highlights the terrorist group’s hypocrisy and greed. While the group blocked the M4 highway as a supposed stand against the “regime,” it was trying to open a crossing with the very same “regime.”
The dismissal of the protest camp on the M4 allowed Russian and Turkish forces to conduct longer patrols on the highway. Nevertheless, a long strip between Arihah and Lattakia is still unsecured. This may provoke yet another crisis between Turkey and HTS in the near future.

Foreign Investors Own Millions Of Acres Of U.S. Farmland
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a major toll on the American food supply chain, with some companies reducing slaughter capacity.
However, many of these companies are owned by foreign investors. According to a May 2019 NPR report, “nearly 30 million acres of U.S. farmland are held by foreign investors. That number has doubled in the past two decades.”
Smithfield Foods, Inc., owns more than 500 farms on 146,000 acres of U.S. soil. Smithfield was purchased by the Chinese company WH Group (then known as Shuanghui Group/Shineway Group), China’s largest meat producer, for $4.72 billion in 2013.
“Right out my back door here, Chinese-owned Smithfield Foods, the largest pork producer in the world, has recently bought out a couple grain elevators, basically extracting the wealth out of the community,” Angela Huffman, a sixth-generation farmer in Wyandot County, Ohio, told NPR at the time.
During this pandemic, at least 518 Smithfield employees tested positive at the company’s plant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which made it the largest single source of coronavirus cases in the country. The plant employs 3,700 people.
Meanwhile, German investors own 71,000 acres of farmland in Ohio, according to that same NPR report.
“They started to buy land in Iowa and Minnesota but right when they started, [Iowa and Minnesota] passed state laws which restricted foreign ownership,” John Trimmer, who manages 30,000 acres of corn and soybean farms for German investors, told NPR. As a result, those German investors took their business to Ohio.
Out of all foreign investors, Canadians own the most farmland in the U.S.
American farmers and corporations also invest in foreign agriculture, owning billions of dollars of farmland across the globe.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will reveal his lockdown exit plan on Sunday after most people in Britain have spent more than six weeks at home to help fight the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
The proposals are to be split into five stages over the coming months, and a leaked version of the plan has suggested the first changes on Monday will see garden centres allowed to open and unlimited exercise allowed.
There will also be a return to sunbathing and picnics, more key workers' children will go back to school, staff will start returning to businesses that stayed open during the lockdown and open-air markets may reopen.
The second stage at the end of May will then see primary schools gradually return with smaller classes and some outdoor sports such as golf and tennis potentially resuming – possibly along with open-air swimming.
Premier League football could return behind closed doors towards the end of June, secondary schools will reopen before the summer holidays and outdoor gatherings of up to 30 people are expected to be allowed.
Cafes could also reopen, before pubs and restaurants follow towards the end of August – although it may take until October for all remaining areas of the economy including gyms to remove their shutters.

Advocates for public education are denouncing the plan by the New York governor and the billionaire founder of Microsoft to “reimagine” the state’s school system, Julia Conley reports.
Public education advocates on Wednesday rejected New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s pledge to work with billionaire entrepreneurs like Microsoft founder Bill Gates to “reimagine” his state’s school systems once the coronavirus pandemic subsides.
In his daily press briefing Tuesday, nearly two months after ordering schools throughout the state to close and millions of children began attending classes remotely from home, Cuomo said New York must “take this experience and really learn how we can do differently and better with our education system in terms of technology and virtual education.”
Cuomo said the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with the state of New York to develop a “Blueprint to Reimagine Education.”
The Covid-19 pandemic, the governor said, offers an opportunity to “revolutionize” New York’s schools in ways that Gates, a school privatization proponent, has promoted for years.
“Bill Gates is a visionary in many ways and his ideas and thoughts on technology and education, he’s spoken about for years,” Cuomo said. “But I think we now have a moment in history where we can actually incorporate and advance those ideas.”
Critics including New York State Allies for Public Education, Class Size Matters, and the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy were wary of handing the state’s education system over to Gates, who previously launched — among other “education reform” projects — a $1 billion initiative in three states to improve “teacher effectiveness” which policy think tank RAND found did “more harm than good” for students.
“Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation have promoted one failed educational initiative after another, causing huge disaffection in districts throughout the state,” wrote the three organizations in a letter to the governor. “Whether that be the high-handed push by the Gates Foundation for the invalid Common Core standards, unreliable teacher evaluation linked to test scores, or privacy-violating data-collection via the corporation known as inBloom Inc., the education of our children has been repeatedly put at risk by their non-evidence based ‘solutions,’ which were implemented without parent input and despite significant public opposition.”

Former CDC Official: Trump Should Quarantine for 14 Days, Could Have Coronavirus
Thursday on CNN, former CDC official Dr. Cyrus Shahpar recommended that President Donald Trump quarantine for 14 days following the news a personal valet to the president has tested positive for coronavirus.
Anchor John King asked, “The president of the United States, a military aid who works very closely with him, has tested positive for coronavirus. The president was retested, and that test shows negative. This aid exhibited symptoms yesterday if it were you if I showed up or if you showed up at your doctor, and that was your story — someone who had been in inches of us, who had symptoms yesterday, who tested positive, what would your recommendation be?”
Shahpar said, “The recommendation would be to quarantine for 14 days from the last contact with the confirmed case, in this case, the valet. And that means staying home, no visitors, separating yourself from others, monitoring for symptoms, wearing a face-covering when you’re around others. Ideally, you’re not, but that would be the recommendation.”
He added, “We all don’t want to transmit disease. In this case, as a high visibly person, I think he should set an example and really go into that quarantine of 14 days. And don’t put too much stock into one negative test,” he said. “It takes time to develop, you know, enough virus to test positive. So, one test today doesn’t necessarily mean that you know, over the next few days, it may not be something different.”

Bill Gates and His 'War Against Cash' Are a Threat to Our Liberty, Economist Warns
A consortium of powerful interests that include Visa and Mastercard, the International Monetary Fund, billionaire Bill Gates and the US Treasury have been slowly lobbying for cash to be abolished worldwide and replaced with digital only currencies.
Norbert Haering holds a PhD in economics and is co-founder and co-director of the World Economics Association, the second largest association of economists worldwide. Dr Häring is a financial journalist, blogger and author of popular books on economics.
His two most recent books covered the campaign to abolish cash. The latest "Schönes neues Geld" (Brave new money) published in German in 2018 just came out in Chinese.
Dr Häring initiated a lawsuit in 2015 for the right to pay his fees to public broadcasters in cash, which has since made its way to the European Court of Justice (CJEU). The date for the oral hearing at the CJEU is set for 15 June 2020.
Sputnik: Please explain - for those who know nothing about the subject - what the campaign to abolish cash is all about and who the main players are.
Norbert Häring: Starting about 2005 the “war on cash”, as they were calling it, was just a declared business strategy of Visa and Mastercard to push back [against] the use of cash, because they see it as the main competitor for their credit cards. From about 2011 this kind of talk stopped completely.
Instead they entered into a coalition with the US-government, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Citibank and formed the Better Than Cash Alliance to pursue the elimination of cash. But now, they do it under the pretended goal of helping the poor by financially including them.
There are very many academic institutes, standard-setting institutions and governments that have been enlisted in this fight against cash, either with the money of Gates and the other members of the Better Than Cash Alliance or with the diplomatic muscle of the US-government, or both.
Sputnik: Why are they doing this?
Norbert Häring: The interest of the financial sector in selling their own products instead of cash is obvious. The IT-companies want the data that [goes] with digitalisation [of cash] and the US-government wants the surveillance and sanctioning power that goes with digitalisation of payments. The other countries that co-operate also like the aspect of gaining more surveillance power over their populations.

Democratic Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal: ‘Enormous Suffering’ Gives ‘Leverage’ To Push Socialist Agenda
Democratic Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal said that the “enormous suffering” that has occurred due to the coronavirus pandemic can be used as “leverage” to push a left-wing political agenda.
The co-chair of the House Progressive Caucus told Vox that the current crisis requires “boldness” from lawmakers looking to provide relief to the tens of millions of Americans who have had their lives upended by the virus.
“For me, the leverage is that there is enormous suffering, and if we do not respond with the boldness and the scale that this crisis demands, then that suffering will continue,” Jayapal said. “I think it’s important for us to not allow ourselves to be pulled into a place where we don’t define the agenda, given that we are the ones that seem to be put in the position of really defining what the solution is going to land on.”
The comments from Jayapal were proceeded in Vox’s story by comments from Democratic Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, who claimed his party would never use human suffering as leverage.
“Democrats have had to step into the breach to minimize suffering. There are a lot of keyboard pundits who view this as a forfeiture of leverage. And I understand what they’re saying,” Schatz said. “But we have to be very clear: They’re talking about using suffering as leverage. That is what the Republicans do, not what we do.”
Jayapal has proposed cancelling rent, and introduced a bill alongside Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib to provide monthly payments to all American adults.

White House Proposes Delaying Tax Filing Deadline Till December
As the economy dives into a depression in the second quarter, the government is looking for different ways to stimulate a V-shaped recovery. According to NCB News, the government could extend the tax filing deadline to possibly December 15.
The White House is currently examining different ways to boost the economy without Congress, NBC noted. After all, the Democrats are surely not going to give the president more stimulus ahead of the election.
A Trump administration official told NBC that the timing of the announcement depends on when the economy reopens and people are returning to work.
