I can't recall the name of it, but in Kundalini yoga there's the concept of building your own inner light/magnetism vs. having a yogi raise your energy through them. Certain yogis refused to do that saying that it's each individual's responsibility to attain a higher state.

Perhaps that's the difference you're highlighting.
